McLaren P14/720s

Here's a quick pic of the 650s replacement... personally I'm not getting too excited about the appearance but I'm sure the performance is breathtaking!

it looks like they've stuck the side air intakes on the wrong way round....

No doubt this thing has been designed/tested in the wind tunnel and the designers know their onions, but that door just doesn't work aesthetically IMHO...

Are they saying that all previous and current rear door/wing air intake and side aero isn't actually the best way to get optimum rear engine cooling? What clever trickery have they come up with elsewhere on the car to achieve this? This design is just about increasing downforce I guess to keep those 720 ponies planted on the tarmac...

I don't like the recessed headlights. They remind me of the 1990 Camaro. Which is a car that looked like shit.

Do you think this car will 'fly off the shelves' or make people appreciate the 650s design more? Either way I'm sure the value of 650's will take a dive despite the high price of this 720...

I was referring to the shape of body not the door intakes.

I think people will appreciate the 650S design, but the price of both will take a dive in resale.

McLaren seems to be throwing out product with no regard for resale value. They overproduce, have super short product life cycles (around 3 years), and they don't manage quality. The net effect is massive depreciation which they themselves are actively stoking. ColdList has given them feedback that their product release pattern is screwing their customers but they don't seem to listen. I would never buy a McLaren unless they change their approach, cut production, increase warranty duration and basically behave more like Ferrari.

Could not agree more this has pretty much summed up my view of them. I love the cars loved the styling lord knows I liked the 12C was modifiable.

But when I tried to work a deal to get a 650 trade my m4+ raptor and cash and finance 190k. I was sooooo glad I didn't take the rate they offered lol. Not but a few months later the guy who bought it had traded it back in with 3k miles and was on their lot for like 220 or something, and with how much I drive I would have literally been 20-30k upside down within 3 months. Let alone a few years. Glad I stayed away from McLaren.

This net effect actually benefits 2nd and tertiary buyers (owners) who understand the market. I see that McLaren has adjusted their 675LT production and the demand and supply appear to be holding. If you throw all this out, which is very hard to do based on the monies spent, the McLarens out perform their competitors (similar classes). The 570S is a great option vs the Turbo S and the Audi V10+ and that car has done much better than the overpriced 12c and 650S yet only falls slightly short in performance (650S).

I would consider one for the driving experience but it would have to be economically wise because of their history with production and pricing.

It's still a bit too early to tell with 570S. I remember the F-Type which started out very well for the first year, and then totally collapsed due to overproduction and cheap leases.

Porsche seems to have also cut back on production with 2017 TTS. It seems to be performing much better than the 2017 R8 on depreciation so far.

Well the 570S has been out longer than the TT-S .2 or the 17 R8 and their sales are steady for the expected volume within the dealer network with reasonable front end pricing from a dealer standpoint (570- as I havent researched the Audi). The Turbo S is down in supply because this is the part of the year where you will see lower totals but wait till the summer and that car will start to flood like the .1 did. The F type is mass produced but when I got it in July of 14 it was the opening run and a must have which I used to get a nice cash buyer out of it. Now that car is a give away. I think McLaren has learned its lesson in exclusivity by controlling the production but we shall see. The other key is starting price points where the 570S is much more reasonable and is lumped with a multitude of mini super cars like but not limited to the: Turbo S, Huracan, Audi, etc. All of these will depreciate but the key is the steepness of the curve.

Just saw this posted on RL. It's from Fchat:

"Just went to McLaren 720S launch at MTC. Was conducted in a mind blowing minimalist auditorium, the car is STUPENDOUS. Totally new carbon monocoque.

Design - totally new, eradicated side vents, glass roof with centre carbon support (visible). New interior also moves game on totally. Overall like a baby Pagani, all mauled look has gone. All plastic interior gone - aluminium. All LCD, screen folds away.

Performance - quicker than LT, 0/200 in less than 7.5 seconds. Fastest gear change of any production car.

Fraction above 488 money.

Ferrari will not know what to make of this car, its that big a step up.

I am a massive Ferrari fan. This car will be a wake up call.

Don't all start waffling on about depreciation etc, just celebrate innovation and guts to do this in 6 years !

Spy shots do not do this car justice."
