Oil analysis

Hello,

I figured I’d post this on the f10 forum since not much actions on the e70 side of things.

Does anyone know the material that our rod bearings consist of in the s63 engine?

Where would the iron be coming from in this Analysis?

I believe your high iron count is attributed to a longer oil run and the viscosity of a 0w/30 oil.

My suggestion is to drop down to a 5K mile interval and change to liquid moly 5W/40. Here's a photo of my last oil change as a comparison. I go 5,000 miles LM 5W/40 with no need to add oil in between.

Sorry. That was an sample when I tried Ravenol 0w/40. I didn't like it at all. It required me to add a quart. Liquid Moly 5W/40 is the best and you won't need to add quarts in between.

Because I am asking what the rod bearings are made from? Sounds like self induced paranoia is on your mind. No?

SO you don't know the answer to the question. Don't chime in unless you have something informative to say.

I'll toss a few thoughts in since I enjoy maintaining my car and researching the oils available. Not an expert here though, so take this for what it's worth...

Looks like the oil that you're running there is the OEM 0w30. One thing about that oil, it is LL01-FE which is a different spec than the LL01 5w30 that BMW also provides at the dealer. The high temperatureI/high shear properties are quite different for each spec. The LL01-FE HTHS minimum is 3.0 while LL01 is 3.5 minimum which is how it performs at 150deg C. The FE oil is 'fuel efficient' and probably not the best long term choice for the S63, especially if you're opening it up or running a longer interval.

I have the BMW 5w30 in my car right now and will swap it around 4-5k. t's a rebranded Shell/Pennzoil product and has some very good properties for use in a direct injected turbo engine.

If you wanna get super geeky, dive into Bob is the Oil Guy and you can find some interesting stuff that will set your mind at ease.

The 0w-30 was the previous owners doing.

I’ve since changed to castrol 5w-30. And I do my oil changes at 3,000 mile intervals.

I went to bmw school of technology. And my teacher who is bmw encyclopedia, and one of the most high profile tuners in the world; told me to stay away from the shell/ bmw oil. As it contains a detergent which washes out the engine a little to much. I always kind of figured there was some kind of additive. But I never knew that it could have an adverse affect on the vehicle.

Thinner 0W30 gets around to the rod bearings quicker from cold, the time when wear is more, I use Edge 0-30 with fst, fluid strength tech, means oil doesn't break down when you're gunning it.Use a thicker oil at your risk.
