Head gasket replacement
Anyone have first-hand experience doing head gaskets on an s63tu? Or any useful links?
I just found out mine may be cooked. Milky oil cap. I never overheated. I don't know why but I do need to deal with this. It's going to be worth my time to attempt a diy. I did the same project on a BMW m20 and a 454. 140,720 miles in. |

Milky oil cap can also be from short trips where moisture gets in. If the oil itself looks good, then I wouldn't worry about it.

Wow, 140k? You're a brave man. Keep driving it though, let it get hot, see what happens.

No, this is the real deal. It's probably just the head gasket. $100 part. And $8,000 of labor. How bad can it be right? ![]() It's not that bad of a job if you just have a little time and tools for it. The timing is really the tricky part. The rest is just nuts and bolts. With that said, I haven't done a cylinder head on a BMW since the m20. Hope you guys aren't eating. Photo below. Honestly it doesn't take much water to froth up the oil. Worst case I'll sell it as a mechanics special and not lose anything. |

Whoa, that looks bad! You've got the dreaded white smoke coming out of the exhaust?
At this point I'd just fix it and keep driving it. Keep us posted on the progress! |

No smoke.. That I can see while driving or idling. Smooth engine.
Starts instantly. Temp always under the "2" on the 250 up top. Snowballs chance in hell... It's been cold. Short trips. Condensation. I need to do an oil change and see what the rest looks like. |

Drain the oil, if it’s normal looking then it just some moisture. It happened on my x5 when I parked for a long period of time, but not as severe as shown in your picture.

Also check your coolant levels. It looks like it was just a lot of moisture.
I've only been going to the gym lately and I get it sometimes in California winters (40f-50f at night). Start taking the longer route home a few days a week or do a cruise on the weekends once in a while, that'll get it hot and clean up the oil. |

If the oil does not heat up enough on very short trips, it is not uncommon to get a milkshake filler cap. If you get the engine up to full temperature for 15 minutes you will flash of the condensate in the oil. Short trips do not heat up the oil enough to flash off the moister. This is all a good excuse to take the long route to where you are going.

Oil change day. Came out looking okay. Nothing of note or concern. Liqui moly back in.
Blackstone kit sent. I don't remember exactly when I had my last oil change and I also don't recall how much I've topped it up. So Blackstone results may be... Unreliable. But it would be good to know what they find in there. |
