Which is best for painting wheels: UV or InfraRed curing process or Powder Coating??
Hi, thinking about getting my 20" wheel colour painted black on M5. My dealer recommends a company that uses UV light for the drying process, but others are saying UV is the cheaper and quicker route...the results will not last more than 18 months - 2 years. Apparently infra red light is the way to go, takes longer but worth it...
Alternatively Powder Coating which is suppose to be better than both UV / Infra Red (wet paints)...? Anyone know about this, had any experience or offer advice? Thanks in advance.

Infra red drying is the older technology.
UV is the newer technology and is very quick drying, but not too many places make it yet. Best is to look for a place that uses top name brand products. Spies Hecker(Dupont), Standox (Dupont) and Glasurit (BASF) as OEM BMW paint suppliers. What may be a little more resilient than the UV dried paint is the old solvent based paints ( as opposed to the new water based paint). But I dont know if they may still sell it in Europe.

Thanks! I've also just been told to go for powder coating if possilbe as this is better than both UV / Infra Red curing which use wet paints as opposed to the 200 degree backing process for powder....?

Definitely powdercoat your wheels. The wheels take too much abuse in the form of debris and rocks to not go with the strongest form of painting.
And it's the most popular method of painting wheels for a factory look. Post pics after you're done |

Thanks for all your replies...Powder coating it is then. Thought about gun metal colour but with SG exterior thought it might clash...?
I thought about the warranty query too...trying to find a BMW dealer to do powder coat to avoid this but proving a bit illusive. If anyone knows of a BMW dealership that would please share...

I'd go for black. Mine is Frozen Gray and it is getting the wheels blacked out as we speak. I'm getting it back on Friday by the end of the day and I will post pictures of the car.
At first I just went for the front and side grills, but after looking at it with the blacked out parts it made no sense at all to have the wheels in factory color. |

Are you going for matt, satin or gloss for the wheels and grills etc?

What warranty? How would painting your wheel effect your warranty?
