That's a factory defect which BMW said could have a bad effect on performance. The problem of a 'whistle' sound when under throttle also disappeared after this got fixed. I've mentioned it several times already, but nobody read it it seems.
You guys should all take your cars to your service and have those holes covered with the replacement from BMW. Why those holes were made in the first place and why exactly it was a recall is beyond me. |

Is there a way to check without removing them? I plugged my VIN into the recall website, but shows nothing for my car.

You don't have to remove the whole box, just the top as if cleaning or replacing the filter. 6-7 torx screws, lift the filter and you can see inside.

My production date was after the oil pump recall. I'll check mine this weekend and post up.
I'm wondering though. Assuming the holes were engineered into the original production they must have served a purpose that later was determined less desirable than the purpose and expense of installing block off plates. Do you think a performance engineer designed the holes to ensure sufficient air volume at WOT but later a sound engineer determined the whistle was undesirable and BMW decided that customers would complain about the noise in every day driving while not noticing a slight decrease in performance at WOT? |

the only thing that will affect performance is hot air. More air/cooler air/ram air is always the goal of any intake. An open hole on the bottle of an airbox given that it is away from the engine is actually better for performance. The only draw back for something like that might be heavy rain or whistling but you guys are debating over something not very important..

quote from my dealer: . He said the answer he got from Germany is that this is a running production change and that there is no positive or negative effect on the way the car runs. They reassured me that no difference should be felt between a car with it and a car with out.
He also said the block off plate parts are available and will let me know when they arrive.

Just opened mine up, and the plates are there. Mine is 2013, Week 35 build. Were the EARLY build cars the only ones without plates?
Here is another question. The E60 had charcoal filters. I was interested in seeing if the F10 did as well. Sure enough, this car has them. Us E60 guys all removed our charcoal filters on the upper half of the airbox. Pain in the butt, on the F10 they are WAY easier to remove (just snap out). With the E60, if I remember correctly, only the North American cars had them. Can any of the european members confirm/deny that they have the charcoal filters? Thinking about taking them out and going for a couple quick spins. Shouldn't cause any issues, as all we are doing is removing another restriction. Anyone else do this?
