Why spend $$$ on mods to make it look like an M?
Perhaps this question has been posed and answered many a times before but someone please explain to me why certain 535/550i owners spend so much money on mods when they could have applied that same money to just get the M in the 1st place? The same question applies for 335i owners.
I see people spending over 20k in mods on a 550i M-Sport when they could have just bought the M5 and called it a day.

Here are my theories:
They didn't earn enough income to qualify for financing on a 100k+ car. OR They couldn't afford the monthly payment on a 100k+ car (I think the minimum monthly payment would be around $1300-1500 assuming a 72 month term and around 10k down). OR They wanted fog lights... |

X drive may be one factor
The other factor is personalize preference on mods thus making their rides stand out from others It's just too bad our M5 does not come with x drive. Maybe they will re-think it over on the next gen M5. |

I was thinking of getting M5 wheels and spoiler plus Dinan suspension for my 550i. Decided that was a waste of money and just bought an M5 instead. I think it is a lack of common sense, or understanding of TCO.

Personally, I think it is just a matter of expediency. Without forward thinking many, including myself, sometimes fall into the trap of the rational "I only need this much so why spend more". But then in the long run we clamor for more and thus spend more just to come up with some car that would almost be at par or close to what we could have had in the first place and probably at a more advantageous cost.

Not everyone that can afford a 60-70K car could just make the jump to a 100K M5. There are less fortunate people out there
That plus other reason such as xdrive, gas mileage, and ones needs for a day to day car. For some 300 or 400hp is more than enough hp but want to modify their car for strictly aesthetic reasons. Adding a trunk lip spoiler and quad exhaust doesn't make someone trying to be a M5. Lots of people have been doing these types of mods long before the M5 even came out here in the states. I do agree that i've seen some 550 owners spend well over 10K on just Dinan mods on a car that already stickered for 80+. That doesn't make sense to me unless you need xdrive because you are already up in M5 pricing territory. Alan

There is important part for this reason. They might buy the 550 before m5 was released. Depreciation hit on their exiting 550 will be another 20k hit if they want to trade in for the m5. So they figure just to spend 10k more to get the dinan tune to make their car as fast as the m5.

And there are people like me who "don't have the common sense" to not throw another $8K to Dinan and $3K to BBS on my X5M

I wouldn't make the same comparison between 335i and M3 as the e92 335i was a turbo engine and could be cheaply modded while the M3 was a N/A engine which required way more money to make it go fast.
I for one can never see myself purchasing a N/A toy, just not as cheap or fun to modify. Also the 550i and 335i were out before the M5/M3 some people need instant gratification! I sometimes wish I had bout the 550i and modded it so I didn't have a 130k car in my garage all winter. |

I personally, have to really try hard not to judge other people and what they do to their cars. I mean it's their personal property, they can do what they want with it right? Well, to an extent anyways. I usually have no problem with people trying to make their 550i or 335i go faster. I mean those are turbo engines to begin with and there is untapped power there. Modifying an NA S65 engine is a different story. Like others have said it is much more difficult, the same was true with the S85. I believe that mods to ones car fall in two categories, one's that increase performance and one's that do not increase performance. If I see someone spending $20 grand to make an E90 335i go with 700hp off of the stock engine block, I think that is interesting. But when I see people drop $20 grand to make an E92 328i look exactly like an M3 or more done up than an M3, it really makes me feeling like giving a Darwin award to them. There's only a few things that really get under my skin and I have a hard time biting my tongue when I see these things done to BMW's. 1. Suspension dropped to the ground or hellaflush. 2. Roof Spoilers 3. Racing trunk Spoilers (unless its a dedicated track car) 4. Wide Body kits 5. Anything from Mansory (Lol!) 6. Converting any body panel on a non-///M series car with an ///M body parts (Best example I can think of are those 1///Mer looking front bumpers that people put on their F30 3 series). 7. Increasing the number of exhaust tips. (I mean you don't see M5 owners going from 4 tips to 6!) 8. Oversized wheels (I once knew this kid that put 22" wheels an E63 M6, ). In the end, I believe the OP has a good point as well as for the reasons as cited by Tomcat.

M550d is a complete joke. Its a 3.0 6 cylinder diesel. It doesn't deliver the claimed 0-62 time. Its a wannabe M and a wannabe 550.

I agree on the fake ///M badges, but actually they don't bother me that much. I think it's just mostly comical when I see an X3///M on the road. Lol! To me it takes much more thought, time, money, and effort to fully convert an E92 328i into an E92 ///M3, without the engine (which I have seen before).
Quick funny story about that 328i dressed up as an M3. I was so disgusted/amused that someone actually went through the trouble, and I mean he went all the way, even put a DCT shift knob on the auto tranny, mirrors, body parts, a completely highschool woodshop designed quad tip exhaust; that I left a note on his car that I too owned an M3, I left him my real phone number, and challenged him to a race. He never called. Lol! Anyways, keeping on topic. Why go through this trouble kids?! And I do mean kids, I have never run into a 45 year old who has done these kinds of things to a BMW. Ugh, I try not to judge, lest I be judged myself, but there are some things I can not let go, like that 328i that I once saw. As for the ///M550d model, the ///M135i, and the upcoming ///M235i, etc, I can understand the reasoning why BMW is doing this however, I don't agree with the way that they are going about it. If they want to design a car that is between a 335i and an ///M3, to complete with the Audi S4's, S5's, S6's, etc, that's fine. However, at least come up with a different naming convention than just sticking an ///M in front of the model number. I think Audi does it right, they keep S4's distincly different from the RS4's. Perhaps BMW should use a different letter than ///M instead of diluting the segment. Perhaps they could called it the ///AM235i, with "///AM" meaning "Almost ///M". Lol!

All of these posts are entertaining and very true. I just saw an e39 "540i" on the road with an "///M" badge on it. I never knew BMW made an ///M540i model - must have been a limited edition... :/

How about ///m
///Almost M used to be called "is". I liked that and wish they had kept the is lineup. They are sticking ///M badges on anything inside the car these days. My nanny's 328i has ///M door sills, steering wheel, etc. At least keep the exterior badging sacred!

Same could be said about M drivers, I could never understand when people mod their new cars. Putting those 20-21 inch rims and lowering perfectly ballanced suspension. At the end of it all it's still a sedan or coupe and wont look anything like moded 458 or even Z06 now those with proper set up and mods look so aggressive.
