What motor oil do you use?
Hello,
About time to change my oil and I was curios what other M5 owner's use. I'm thinking about getting Liqui Moly 2332 Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40; https://www.amazon.com/Liqui-Moly-23...omotive&sr=1-2 Thanks, |

I used to use Liqui-Moly on my previous E39 M5 and E90 335d, and I liked them a lot. However, with my new-to-me 2015 F10 M5, I'm going to use the 5w-40 viscosity for my climate here in Central Texas, but I suggest folks to consider the BMW LL-01 approved Ravenol VollSynth Turbo, or VST, 5w-40.
The LM 2332 has a NOACK of 10, (I give LM credit for at least publishing such data though, most do not,) where the Ravenol VST has a NOACK of around 7.4. NOACK is all the more so important on DI engines running a turbocharger, let alone two of them. (Low NOACK essentially equates to less carbon buildup in your motor.) Ravenol is very transparent on their oil specs and I find that refreshing. Ravenol also consistently posts superior pour and flashpoints which I believe is a testament to the base stock they begin with. You can buy Ravenol from their USA distributor in Wisconsin, Blauparts. Very competitive pricing and free shipping over $100 with no sales tax (yet.) https://www.ravenol.de/en/products/u...sae-5w-40.html https://www.ravenol.de/fileadmin/con...sentation_.pdf https://www.ravenol.de/en/company/cleansynto.html

TBN is the Go (Total Base Number)
G’day
I use Mobil 1 0W-40 and it works brilliantly (nil oil burn on my engine with approx 33k km ). I replace oil and filter every year regardless of km travelled etc . By the way the Higher the TBN (Total Base Number) of an oil the better it holds pollutants/ash etc from the combustion process . It also is more stable and less volatile at high temps ( and in a “hot vee” engine this is a must). But look all major brands are good but some are much better then others ! Cheers Bruce |

I just buy the OEM 5w-30 service kits from turner, ecs or other online shops (whichever has the best price)....i did read somewhere that BMW now recommends 0W-30 on M cars though.

That's right. In UK,BMW dealers use Shell in their own one litre containers though I buy better value three Castrol Edge 0-30 titanium FST 4 ltr containers at yearly oil change and there's 2.5 litres left for top ups. The same Castrol 5W-30 oil is NOT recommended for M5..

I had an oil change done at a BMW dealership this past Saturday (car is still under certified warranty). They put 9.5 qts of 0W-30 BMW Twin Turbo oil. I requested 5W-30 but they put 0W-30 instead.
