Traction control was off. Hit two curbs
As the title states I the right and left curbs when I gunned it from a turn. I forgot traction control was off. I was able to drive it home, but I got brake warning on the main screen and night vision disabled. Obviously I have damaged the front suspension. Is my car going to be totaled?

It just depends after you get it checked out. The thing about a car being total is that it depends on the cost of repair to car valve. I'd say atleast you were able to drive it home but hard to say.

Yeah. The right wheel when parked is facing towards the right. The left front seems to be straight but hard to say since I hit both right and left curb. There is no body damage which surprises me. I guess the curbs were not that big.

Also in principle, you should never gun it while in a turn. Traction control or not. Treat a turn like an apex and do all your necessary braking before entering the turn or apex and perform acceleration as you're leaving the apex. Affectionately called braking and entering. |

I was actually going straight. I just finished making a left turn 90 degrees. I’ve had the car for two months. I looked at the tires and they aren’t in good shape. The car has 35k miles on it and the tires look like they have never been replaced.

I think the guy was looking for good advice not criticism. Shit happens, get it fixed out of your own pocket if possible and get back to driving it. Careful though as it's a very powerful car which you have found out. Get used to modulating the throttle with traction on then MDM. I've not bothered going any further. I drive in MDM all the time except when its wet.

Put some new tires (I suggest Michelin PS4's)... and take it easy.
Good luck with the repairs.

No need to over react. Your car is not totaled. Even if the front subframe got damaged, they can just replace it. A friend of mine owns a 2010 335xi and slid into a curb with the rear wheel. They had to replace most of the rear suspension, the subframe, wheel, etc. WAYYY more stuff than you would think but it didn't total the car... a 10 year car with 110,000 miles on it that's worth much less than an M5.
Take this as a good lesson. Practice controlling and learning the limits of the car in a safe environment and then buy some nice tires. |

I don't mind the jokes honestly. I am an idiot. I could floor my raptor and nothing happened. This thing will get sideways quick.
I just want some advice. The technician said I need a knew left front knuckle, lower control arm and steering gear (rack and pinion)? He stated that anytime there is a hard collision on the suspension that the rack and pinion need to be replaced. He said that part alone is 3500. I did a google search and found it for 1800. They will call me later today with the final numbers. I just hope they break the price down in parts in labor. If they try to sell me a rack and pinion for 3500 then I will show them the one I find. I don't know enough about cars and suspension to know if the steering gear needs to be replaced. It is not bent at all. |

Had a similar incident happen when I first started driving. Ended up replacing a front rim, upper and lower control arm, tie rod, and wheel bearing. Did the work myself and learned a valuable lesson... I would recommend buying all the parts you need online and having an indie shop install. Shouldn't be that expensive

the body is fine. there is just some rash on the bottom of lip. The wheel on the driver side is facing left about 10 degrees when the wheels are straight. I looked underneath the car when it was on the lift at the shop. lower control arm definitely bent. knuckle definitely bent too on drivers side front. The steering rack is not damaged.
I wish I had pics. |

The funny thing was those who thinks they can drive actually did the worst. Most students when they spun they hit the brake and the car came to a stop. But some will counter steer trying to save the car but without proper feel and throttle/steering control, the car will shift momentum and then actually spin the other way. On the road this just means you will hit more stuff. Be careful out there next time and be mindful of your car's settings., |
