new (to me) M5, need to top off oil, what to use?
Heyo,
Oil level warning came on. When the dealer changed it they put in either Mobil 1 or Castrol. Am I good to just buy a quart of Castrol Edge 0W-30 (or 0W-40) and top it off, regardless of which of those two it is? Last edited by vafan13; 06-14-2019 at 09:35 AM.. |

Hello, yeah you can put in either one really. I would recommend knowing exactly what oil they use OR do the oil change yourself and buy some extra for top-offs. I personally use liquid moli 5w-40.

I usually buy a couple extra liters of the oil i used to change the oil (use BMW 5w-30) but i once topped off using Mobil 1 5w-30 because i wasn't going to be home for a few days and it did the trick, no issues.

When I talked to the dealer on the phone just now they said most likely it was mobil 1 they put in it, so I'm just going to grab a quart of mobil 1 0W-40, given that's what's LL01. |

They likely didn't take the time to drain all the oil correctly, nor the time to fill it correctly. There is a big oil cooler on the front of the engine, right where the grill takes a big gulp for fresh air. For the price and availability, you likely will not go wrong with the M1 0w-40 Euro Formula. I think the key to protecting the bearings is in the selection of a good full synthetic 40w viscosity. (Find the one with the lowest Noack that you can.)

Sorry, should have specified: there was ~2350 miles between the dealer doing the oil change and me getting the low level light. Based on what I've read about this car's oil consumption, that seems like a completely reasonable amount of time to burn through a quart. (correct me if wrong).

I'm glad to hear you will change it yourself going forward. It's quite easy on these cars, albeit a bit messy for the filter change.
I use Mobil 1 0w-40. Been about 20,000 miles since I bought the car. I change it every 5k miles. My consumption has decreased as well. I top off 1/2 quart at a time (as measured by the OBC). I get about 3,000 miles per quart so generally I put in 1 quart and by the time it's low enough to top off again I'm ready to change the oil so I don't bother. 1 quart between changes is like heaven! haha. I'm used to my e39 M5 that averages 1 quart every 1,000 miles like clockwork for the past 295,000 miles. |
