Was looking for a N52 E90, but a deal on a E60 2008 M5 came up
So, I have a 2011 Mustang GT and a 2007 Toyota Camry XLE V6, and the wife has a 2015 4Runner Limited. The Camry was hers, and I had a prior 2002 Explorer V8 as my winter beater, but it died, so I got the 4Runner with the idea that my wife would drive it because it new and big enough for our boys, 2 and 2 months. Which leaves me alternating between the Stang and the Camry. The Camry is a great car, quiet, comfetable, very powerful (V6 with 270 hp), reliable, and the most terrible lifeless vehicle ever. i hate it. I'm a die hard Stick Shift guy, so I would prob like it if it was stick, but it's not, and it needs to go.
So I was looking for a E90 N52 engined car with 6sp. I'm doing all the research, which this site is awesome, and I m finally ready to actually start looking at cars, when a guy in another department says he's selling his 2008 M5, 6sp. We chat about cars all the time, and he's getting rid of it because he works at our NYC location now, and never drives. Problem is, price. Naturally I wanted to unload the shitbox (it's really not) and get the E90 with net price only 2-4k. The M5 is KBB worth 20 to 22.5k. So essentially I have to sell the Mustang and Camry. Now this is a BMW Forum, so normally this is an easy decision, and the M5 has 51k miles while the Stang has 67,500 and the shitbox has 96k in addition to the fact that the M5 probably smokes the Stang while being more comfertable. He's the hard part. This isn't just any Stang. My brother custom built this car in May 2010, it's grabber blue with zero options other than the brembo s, 19" pirelli s, rapid spec suspenstion. It was his baby. I at the time had an 2006 Mustang GT. We did everything together in our Mustangs. And then he tragicaly died in 2015. There was still a loan on his car, so I sold mine, and paid his off to keep it. Now, at time we bought them, we were in our 20s, just started Jobs, no wife or kids. I'm now 32 married with two kids. But I'm still an enthusiast. I figured at this point I would have moved on from muscle cars to something more dynamic and family friendly. In the End, the decision is mine and mine alone, so I'm not here to ask for help, but I am curious to see what you would do? |

Tough call with the sentimental value of the Mustang.

Keep the Mustang as you will be able to pass it down and it holds a strong sentimental value. There will be other deals that come along and the price of some of these vehicles are going to get lower. Also, on a sidenote, it doesn't sound like you necessarily need another vehicle right at this moment! haha

Emotions are emotions and attachment to a car cannot be understood by others. That's your decision.
But looking at family practicality, manual fun and the fact that you know the owner of the M5, I would say get it if you can sell Camry & mustang both. Even if the price is little higher you will save money on insurance by reducing one car. Good luck with your decision ! P.S. - did you test drive the M5 yet ? |

Unless you have alot of disposable income I would keep an extra car for when the M5 breaks and it costs $$$ to repair. That way you have something to drive while you're saving up.
No joke, before you buy it look into the cost of ownership. Although it will probably "wow" you on the test drive, reliability is not an E60 M5 strong point. And they didn't make enough of them to make the parts reasonably priced. Dave |

Bummer timing, I recently traded my e90 manual for my M5. Had just but new Bilsteins and tires all around! I should have never test driven the 14 M5... I don't think you will be disappointed with the e90. Not nearly as expensive to keep as an M car, and less guilt when you throw your hockey gear in the back. It will not be as fast as the M5 or the Mustang, but will out handle the Ford easily. HUGE improvement over the Camry! Just to my 2 cents. Good luck

The Mustang will outhandle a 330/328/325, there was an article that compared it against the 2011 M3, which at the time had a V8. Now, the M3 won, naturally, but on a road course it didn't win by much.
In the real world, the Mustang is live real axel, so it doesn't like hitting bumps and turning. And since I have the sport suspension, bumps are running over paper clips. Hit two paperclips while turning, and turn into a drift king. Thats where the E90 N52 cars will be better. |
