Talk to me about Frozen Silver
Considering this color for my F10 M5 order. I've heard that the 'Frozen' colors can be a pain in the rear in terms of maintenance (i.e., have to be careful when washing). Is this true? Will a simple clear coat solve any associated problems?
In the end these frozen colors may be a little too 'look at me' for my liking. However, I do like them and the silver version is something I'm definitely considering. Thanks, JC

Hopefully clar will respond since he has both a frozen grey M5 and M3 already. But if I remember from hearing m3post members who have frozen colors, they've taken care of them as usual. See this guy's thread.

I have in several of my posts, remarked that both my Frozen Gray M3 and M5 are maintenance free. I don't do anything special other than the manual car wash at the gas station. I love the frozen paint work for its maintenance free nature. There is no need to deal with water mark on this paint work and dust and dirt don't show up until its downright filthy.
Concerning the last point however, some fellow frozen color owners have recently raised the point that my frozen gray is so maintenance free becos it's gray. Gray colored cars are inherently less maintenance intensive, so it's not so much the frozen treatment, but the gray that is helping. A frozen black owner bitched about his paint job saying it's about the same as normal glossy black. If that is true, it's quite safe for u to go with Frozen Silver as silver colored cars are easy to maintain as well If i have to do it again, i will get the same Frozen Gray for both my rides a few times over

A Normal Clear coat would make it shiny. The color underneath the clear coat is usually the same as many other colors. Frozen Gray has the same paint as Space Gray underneath the matt clear coat. Only difference is Matt Clear coat VS Gloss Clear coat.

Still need to wax the car and protect it. The clear coat can still be damaged from contaminants. Just no swirl marks.
Swissvax and others make a specific wax for the opaque colors. The flat color also lets the dirt stick and therefore the proper wax on the surface is even more important. |

Thanks guys, I wanted to make sure because I don't want anything that would be any more of a pain then the non 'frozen' colors.

Don't think i could live with a frozen color car in a practical everyday world, because i've heard it's a pain in the ass to upkeep.
Clar: How often do you drive your cars on a daily basis?

I drive my cars everyday whether it's the M5 or the M3. Note that it rains a lot over here making it even more maintenance intensive. Because my frozen grey don't suffer from water marks, its even more incentive for me. I can actually get away from washing the car by subjecting it to a heavy downpour

White is quite a pain to maintain due to it not hiding dirt very well.

Found this from an official BMW press release regarding frozen paints.
"About BMW Individual Frozen Paint Colors. The special BMW Individual matte paintwork on the M3 Competition Edition adds a rare metallic luster to the vehicle. Compared to conventional exterior colors with gloss finish, the sculpture-like character of the Frozen Silver paint highlights the athletic contours of the M3. To achieve this luster, a special BMW-developed silk matte clear coat is applied over the Silver Metallic base coat. BMW Individual’s Frozen paints meet or exceed all BMW standards for durability and longevity, and feature a full factory warranty. Special care guidelines are provided to customers and authorized BMW centers to prevent the finish from becoming glossy." |

My two cents. My car is almost a daily driver too. I drove it in the winter (on nice days only and since we had no snow here almost entire time, it didn's see any snow, but still). As Clar says it is almost maintenance free.

You got to see the Frozen in real life if you haven't yet. No swirl marks or micro scratches showing, like they would on your glossy finish.

Dude, frozen paint ain't rocket science. Your authorized dealer should be able to respray for you when needed. Over here, there is at least one paint shop outside of the dealership that can do a BMW frozen paint job, and do it just as well.

I think to each their own. But I would say there is increased risk in maintenance and I suspect as more cars get out in circulation we'll here more about the frozen colours.

No, even that sounds like a PITA. In all seriousness, its down to Moonstone or Frozen Silver, I just don't know about DD'ing a 'matte' color.
