Question about Next-Gen iDrive Touch + ConnectedDrive BMW Professional
Has anyone heard when the iDrive Touch feature will finally see production?
Am I correct in assuming that the F10M5 is at least fitted with the next-gen ConnectedDrive BMW Professional (i.e. 3D rendering when navigating, voice-driven SMS texting, etc.)? |

Yes, 2013 M5 has updated nav.
Is touchscreen assured as a future? BMW seems to believe that touch is not as safe or effective while driving as the standard iDrive knob.

BMW hasn't announced anything about this to my knowledge except that it'll be rolled out in China first since they can benefit most from being able to draw the complex and numerous characters in their languages -- but even there I don't remember them giving a release timeframe, never mind the order in which various models will get it.

Some of the new advanced functions such as pictures in maps and enhanced real time traffic will require subscription to the BMW Assist Convenience plan . You won't get them with the basic BMW Assist coverage

At least in the US, it's $199/year, but to get that you also need the Safety Plan (i.e. standard BMW Assist) which is free for 4 years and then costs $199/year itself. That exists now for other cars, it's not new for this generation of nav, though they may be expanding their available services to cars that support new functions.

Apparently, the newest gen of iDrive is called iDrive 4.2.
On the Nav, it has 3D city models and has general "Virtual 3D" graphics. Text dictation for composing emails and SMS text messages only works on some phones (i.e. NOT on the iPhone, etc.). On www.bmwusa.com/bluetooth one can see what phones are “Office” compatible, specifically with “Sending emails” and “Sending SMS” availability. |

No iPhone support for headline features is a joke.
On my ED trip, Siri seemed to work using in-car hands free bluetooth, but no useful info on car display. Funny related story: we were cruising in the Alps and weren't sure if we crossed over into Italy. I asked Siri "where am I" and She replied "I'm sorry Chris, I cannot provide location based services while in Italy." Boom. Outsmarted her. We used this "trick" several more times. |

Better Siri support is coming. Right now it's kind of a hack where Siri is able to hear your voice through the car by tricking iDrive into thinking a phone call to no one just randomly started, but you have to invoke Siri on the iPhone itself, not from the steering wheel. THAT will require work from BMW to fix.
