Which oil out of the 4 choices??
Hi Guys,
I was at the dealer yesterday buying all of my new ///M accessories and i asked about a quart of oil, they assured me that i was supposed to use the TWS 10W-60 which we all know is wrong. After about 2 hours of crazy searching i found out that the new Castrol German made oil that is LL01 approved is now called: Castrol Edge SPT 0W-30 My question is should i go with which of the following for the new M5? i am torn: 1) Genuine BMW High Performance 5W-30 2) Castrol Edge SPT LL01 approved 0W-30 3) Motul 8100 X-cess 5W-40 4) Redline 5W-30 All of these are LL01 approved except for the Redline oil I live in Miami FL and i will push the car to the limits here and there, i probably wont track the car if only maybe a few times in its life. Thoughts?? |

In the manual it says you can use:
0W-30 0W-40 5W-30 5W-40 You might want to find out what (competent) BMW dealers use for the 1M, X5M, and X6M, since I believe they have the exact same oil spec as the M5. I'm reading that 5W-30 tends to be used in the US, but not sure about brand. I'm not surprised that a dealer thought 10W-60 was needed, sadly. I just hope they'd notice the spec on the oil cap before actually putting that into someone's car....

Take your pick
BMW 5W-30 is what's in my M5 and that's what I'll continue to use. However, the attached file shows all approved oils for use in the S63T(U) engine.

Just get the BMW oil.
Another option is Mobil 1 0W40, which is also LL01/ACEA3. But I burned oil with this vs not burning a drop I with the BMW oil in an N54 engine. .

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

BMW put 5w-30 during my service. Assume I need to continue using 5w-30 when topping off? Or can I use the Castrol 0w-30?

They aren't BMW approved. Neither is AMSOIL.
If you want that sort of thing, you should get Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 european blend. Bob the oil guy uses it. The thing that bothers me about Castrol Edge is I have read multiple reviews saying it is a dirty oil. There is also a video on youtube comparing it to BMW Oil and the BMW oil seems cleaner. This a concern in an engine known to burn oil. You want an oil which produces little ash.

actually, if I may add ...
I doubt any of the M5 owners will do oil change once a year, therefore, I believe any brands oil (approved) will do. I will change mine out every 6 months |

Yes that's what I do too. In the past I used to do every 4 months, but 6 months seems more sensible.

Time or distance?
It seems to me the mileage based oil change is the more sensible method rather than a time based change interval? I'm not knowledgable about the chemical properties of oils, either petroleum based or synthetic, but I wouldn't think the oil breaks down while sitting in the oil pan over time. It's the wear and tear on the oil while lubricating moving parts that is the primary factor.

For those in Europe ... here is a current offering on the Castrol Edge FST 0W40 5 L for 39.50 Euro. Not sure if this is a good deal or not.

Just an update since I started this thread, I am very good friends with my dealer's shop foreman (bmw mechanic) and he ensured me to use the regular bmw high performance oil 5w-30 (in the silver bottle that they use for the regular 535i)
He said that he would highly recommend me paying for an additional oil change in between at 5k intervals if I am planning on keeping the car and i want to be in great shape I will allow him to use the bmw oil even though i hear it can sludge earlier than Castrol, i mentioned this sludge factor and he said 'that's why I said to do it every 5k' Lets see what happens, I'm not so sure I feel like showing up to my oil change appt with bags of my own castrol oil either... |

I'm thinking of making the switch to GC 0W-30 soon. How many quarts do I need? Should I just buy the oil on Amazon and then take it to your guy Armando?
