I've noticed that the car seems to have lower acceleration stats in US magazine tests than in overseas magazine or US magazine tests conducted in Europe. This filter definitely is one factor.

I'm personally not surprised by removing the charcoal filters netting a like 15hp gain. With those dang GTR's, all you have to do is change to a high flow air filter and gain like 100hp! Time for us ///M guys to enjoy the benefits of having a turbo engine now!

I'm just here to pass along what I think is good info to fellow members!
Dealer did not comp me for parts and labor and I spent a lot of time going to get it dyno'd. A member asked if I would pull the charcoal filter and dyno after plates were installed. I knew my car was running slow during a run we did at high elevation in the canyons as I would have to downshift early to keep the speed up. My shop open up the air box as I wanted to see the charcoal filter and we discovered the holes which he said was strange. He got in another M5 few weeks later and took picture of the sealed box which I sent to dealer. Overall I'm happy with how the car is running so now just waiting for the right tune. If you have doubts i suggest you do your own dyno. I'm not here to sell you anything...just sharing my own info

Question
Is it safe to say we can just pull the charcoal filters and throw them (put them in a box in the garage) away and drive safely with or without any perceived increase in hp and/or feel?
There is no downside to doing this?

So now we need someone to dyno with the snorkel. I unfortunately have a hole in the air box. If I remember correctly, the hole was the only place for the intake to draw air from. If you cover this, where does outside air come from?

To me it seems that there would be very little difference in HP produced with any of the three airbox designs. More a difference in sound I'd think. The carbon filter though, might reduce airflow enough to add slightly to HP when removed. My car does seem to rev faster without it. For Tourbillon, there is another intake opening in the front of the airbox. |

There is a duct that lead from the airbox to the front bumper, just like the E60 M5 intake design. If any of you remember, this is why RPi designed their own block off plates for the E60 M5 intakes. There was a hole on the bottom that came from near where the front brakes were. RPi discovered that by covering them with a block off plate, they dyno'd an extra 5hp gain. The hole ends up creating a vacuum effect, thus robbing the air that is supposed to be going into the engine. At least this is how they explained it to me. Seems to make sense. This also seems to be proven now that Fly M5 has blocked his holes off, which I guess eliminated that vacuum effect. But who knows it could be completely something else.

I just took my charcoal filters out, and I have the block of plates. Although i'm not sure how to check the build date. I picked the car up in May 2012 and it has the block of plates.

Agree with the comments - definitely lower end improvement and slightly better sound when you remove those filters. It's a bit more responsive. Nothing earth shattering but noticeable. I remember the same with my E60 M5. When you put the charcoal filter up to light - you can't see through it. The removal was simple if you follow the directions. It took about 10-15 minutes max.

No risk at all, you can pull them. They're added to the car just to pass California EPA regs - they are supposed to absorb fuel vapors that travel back up the intake while the engine is shut off. Putting them in all cars makes the M5 "50 state compliant".

I have done this on both my f10 m5 and f12 m6... both cars "feel" quicker off the spool and seem to be very slightly more aggressive on throttle in runs from 60 to 150mph. I also lifted up my stock air filters and both my cars have the plates. You can check your build date of your cars on the door jam (not sure if mentioned) and both of mine are 08/2012.
