Surprising Airfields race results
Before I begin a brief summary of my day at the No Fly Zone Race day, I do not have any video's to share, so you'll either trust my results, or not. Either way, I'm not a kid and have nothing to prove. Just want to share.
I took my M5, which is stock except for Meistershaft Exhaust and carbor filter delete, and my son took my 458, which is totally stock. I'm going to tell you about a few races in no paticular order. All races were 1/2 mile starting at 40mph in second gear. End speed was about 150mph. First notable race was against another 2013 totally stock M5. No exhaust. i expected to crush him based on my $7000 exhaust system. Truth be told, I beat him by a car length, but only because I got the jump. If anything, I think he was gaining on me at the end of the run. So much for the 35hp I thought I got from my exhaust system. Next I had the race everybodys waiting to hear about. I ran a 2012 GTR with full exhaust. We ran twice, I won the first by 2 car lengths and he won the second by about 3. The cars were very close and the wins depended on who got the better start. I was very please with the outcome. Third race was against a brand new 2013 C63 with the optional performance package. I got a slight jump on him and won the race by a couple of car lengths. Great race and very close. Forth race was aginst a 2011 Ferrari California which I absolutely killed. He had all kinds of problems getting the car to shift at redline without hitting the rev limiter. Fifith race was against my own 458. It wasn't pretty. It beat the M5 by 6 car lengths and wasn't even breathing hard. Love my 458. That's it for now. Next time out I'll have a GoPro hooked up...

I would've expected you to absolutely pummel the C63 PP, I guess those things are quick too! Wish we had the power to weight of a 458, those things fly and sound godly doing it. Thanks for sharing.

Keep in mind that this C63 sedan had the special addition 510hp Black Series motor. Very rare car. The M5 would kill a standard C63 or a C63 with the option Performance Package option.

Second example of stock M5 vs full catback aftermarket exhaust. I did 3 runs stock vs full RPI GT exhaust and it was a dead heat each time. No gains.
It looks like the only exhaust improvements are going to come from less restrictive downpipes. BMW made a darn good free flowing stock exhaust from the cats back. 458

I remember I once offered a Ferrari California to race me, knowing I would eat him alive and the unaware teen replied "Why not buy yourself a Ferrari too? I don't race because it's a Ferrari I would leave you in dust"

True, but be careful if it's a 2013. Ferrari has made some noteable improvements to the new California and I think it would be very close.

Thanks for sharing results. I recall Vic just put his black series C63 on the dyno and it only threw down 450whp and 407wtq...I smell you got hustled by a tune

To be sure about the hp gains with a full exhaust system is better to "dyno" the car before and after installation
With the hp and torque charts you'll also know in which rpm range the car is more potent |

But the 458 has no torque so it could not have beaten the big torque m5 lol! Where are all the torque fans now. 398 foot pounds. Shoot a tuned 335i with 420 foot pounds should be crushing it right???
Have to remember to cite this post next time (which happens every day) a torque vs hp debate comes up |

I've Dynod the m5 with open down pipes and it still didn't show a noticeable gain. These exhaust companies are trying to rip everyone off . Got to address the real bottleneck in the downpipes first. |

Pretty disappointing, knowing people are paying over 5k+ for exhaust systems and not getting the gains these manufacturers are claiming. Believe it or not, some of these after market systems will cause you to lose HP/TQ! Honestly, I'm happy I stayed stock.
Thanks for sharing your results, very impressive. Last edited by Tylerstar; 03-04-2013 at 12:44 AM.. |

I don't think a 35hp gain on a 560hp car will make much of a difference in a drag race. Now if you have a tune that would be a different story.

You are right, It would be a very minimal difference but it's still a gain over stock. Basically for the M5 to keep up with a 458 I think it will need over 670HP. Also, I am kind of curious to know what the temperature was when these runs where made. |

I'm both a torque and HP fan. The way the F10 M5 delivers it's power is so addictive and is so much more useable in the real world than the top end power of a high revving NA engine. If you have driven one of the new BMW diesels you will understand how the big torque numbers make a car fun to drive, even around town, as you have that big wave of torque thrusting you forward with a shove in the back. This is why the in-gear acceleration times are so much better for a car with a high torque engine. This has to be experienced to understand how addictive and fun it is... On the other hand a high revving NA engine has the potential to be more rewarding to drive and has that combination of high revs and power delivery at the top end that is also highly addictive (but less accessible as you have to rev the engine to the max and therefor less "socially acceptable"). The M5 would probably crush the 458 in a 5th gear 50-100 run, as the torque of the M5 would just shove it forwards whereas the 458 needs to be in it's sweet spot of the rev range to gain some speed... Remember that the 458 is lighter and not least that the gearing of the 458 is matched to the NA engines characteristics just as the gearing on the M5 is matched to a turbocharged torque monster. Meaning that both engines operate at the most efficient part of their respecrive rev range during 0-100 accelerations. Switch gear ratios between the two cars and the M5 would hit the limiter way to soon in each gear as tehy would be way to short. The 458 would struggle with the longer gearing of the M5 and be way to low in the rev range in each gear at every upshift. |
