Blackstone Oil Analysis F10 M5 - oil looks good but mid-cycle oil change recommended
Context about my car:
1) I followed break-in procedure for the first 1500 miles rigorously. After that I have driven the car as one would expect an M Car to be driven by a guy who owns it (i.e. robust driving but no abuse, and properly following warm up and cool down techniques). 2) I did the break-in service at 2000 miles because I was on an ED trip for those 2000 miles and didn't want to waste a day of my holiday at a car dealer. The break in service was performed prior to redelivery and they used BMW 5W-30 oil. 3) During the first 2000 miles my car did not burn any oil. 4) During the next 4900 miles my car burned 0.25 quarts (implying an extrapolated oil usage rate of one quart per ~19k miles - well below what others have reported) 5) During the most recent oil change I switched to German Castrol 0W-30 Perspectives on the oil analysis - Oil is still good to use longer as one would expect after 4900 miles on 5W30 BMW synthetic - Higher than average metal content consistent with what I have heard about the S63TU. This implies that the 2000 mile break-in service is not sufficient to capture break-in metal content. Probably need another oil change at 4000-6000 miles. - Given my last point, I'm glad I did a mid-cycle oil change and would encourage others to do the same. Perspectives on German Castrol 0W-30 - Car seems to run a little smoother - especially upon startup. It is quite noticeable. - The engine seems to reach operating temperature faster, but then maintains temperature very well. - Based on my recent 11.9s quarter mile on my first drag strip outing, I think the car is running very well on 0W-30 Castrol Edge.

Great info, thanks for sharing this. I really should get this done as soon as the tax season is over. My local dealer will charge $50 while I will supply oil & filter.

Everyone should take notice that break-in isn't over at 1,200mi. The initial break-in is 0-1200.

I add oil frequently enough that I doubt I will ever need to change the oil. Just the filter.

Funny, but for the benefit of the more lay readers on this board, we should note that the oil is unlikely to take the contaminants with it when it burns off. Ie oil change still needed.

I went on a 400km drive today and 1/2 down the trip my "add 1L" came up. Basically, mine burns 1L every 3000km. Doesn't bother me but my dad was with me today and he seemed confused as he never had to add any motor oil in his nissan/infiniti over the last 20 years. Told him no to worry.
(Also, my orange CEL came on again after 200km of highway driving, interestingly, as we got back in the city, it disappeared again after I restart the car@@)

I've had to add 2x's so far and I think I have around 5k now. Dont remember havent seen the car in 3 weeks now. I agree that I have never had to add any oil to any car I've owned. Our old 00' boxster was fantastic on service. Just seems this m5 likes to drink. Stealth, chk pm

Very confused. And next week I am going on a 4 day road trip with the M5, this time I plan to reinstall the oem air filters instead of running those BMCs. Will report back if any differences are made. Also hope I can get the mid-cycle oil change done this week.

I've also had to add a quart of oil twice now(at 6200 miles). The dealership says that the high-performance engine will burn some oil and it's nothing to worry about. I've never seen this before in any other car so I don't get it, but they reassure me that it's ok.

I have done the mid-cycle oil changes on all my other previous BMW's. Just makes sense on expensive cars.

Agree. I suspect though that most of the lease holders won't do this, which is why if anyone is buying used its better to buy from an owner than an off lease car from a dealer.

I look at these reports at work often... I have to say this one made me chuckle. It's stated in laymens terms.
You need to take out the dictionary to understand our reports. Thanks for sharing. I never even thought about getting this done on the car. Good idea. |

I wonder how many F10M5'ers run the BMC filters? (removing the Charcoal filters of course). |
