Check Engine and "Drivetrain Malfunction"
Hello everyone,
I'll start from the beginning with this one. I have an F10 M5 at 11K miles with the usual break-in service and obligatory monthly oil additions, always fill up with 91, no problems until recently. About a week and a half ago I notice some rough idle. The car sits at the stoplight, tach steady at just under 1,000 rpm, then it dips and the engine shakes a bit, then back to normal. I ask a friend who has the same car, says his does the same thing, so I just watch it... keeps doing it, I take it last week for service. They find nothing, do an oil change, return the car with recommendations to only use Chevron or Shell. Well today, about a week later, I am pulling away from a stop going about 35 and the engine starts knocking and shaking and I pull off the gas, it slows down, engine is shaky and rough all the way to standstill. Check engine light comes on and the screen reads "Drivetrain Malfunction: drive moderately, maximum drivetrain output not available. Consult service center." Dropped it off 10min later, then went to work. Service guy leaves message to "update" me... theyre holding the car overnight, not telling me anything about diagnostics. So I bring it to the wizards on this forum... It all started with these hiccups during idling. Any thoughts? |

sounds like injectors. maybe some air in the injects...
try using some 100, see what happens, 8 gallons of 91 and 10 of 100.

This happened to me yesterday--new 2013 328ix.
Same problem years ago with a new Volvo S60. Problem then was a failed (failing) Oxygen intake sensor. Relatively minor warranty fix. Suggest this to the dealer . |

Please advise if the engine is running smoothly and normally now.
I had the same thing last night on my car and it has 23k miles. I wonder if I should drive it for the weekend before sending it to the maintenance. Please advise. |

Had same issue with 2 cars 550i Dinan 2012 and they changed all injectors and spark plugs but that gave me Drive Train Malfunction and was really rough and shaky engine idle.
While sadly today in my M5 for about 10 minutes I would say lack of power... I would push gas pedal all way to 80% and RPM won't go even above 1.5k with D2 or even D3 and I turned the engine off in the middle of the road a couple of times and at the 2nd time came back on as if nothing ever happened!! Is my nearby Shell 93 gas that bad? Please advise |

what a dumb, and stupid excuse and recommendation to use only shell and chevron gas. Its all the same gas, except each gas company has there own additive, but every gas station has filters at the pump by LAW in California.

Have you been frequenting the same gas station?
Go to a different station as it could be that station (not brand). If you go to the same shell often, go to a different shell or a chevron or other top tier gas station in your area. If you picked up water in your tank you will need to have the gas drained out of the M5's tank and or might need parts replaced.

Gas tanks are underground. They stay there long term. Water is also underground. Water is heavier than gas. Fill up when the station is low and next thing you know, you have water tainted gas in your tank. These things happen - regardless of gas station brand. One reason why I avoid filling up at any gas station while a tanker is present and refilling the station's tanks.

Sounds like you need to do some research. We have done extensive dyno research on a different turbo car with standalone aem ecu and aem wide band. Chevron and 76 generated a lot less knock than shell and arco gas. The car made more horsepower and air fuel ratios were much better on chevron. Yes, the quality is very different from one station to another and from one location to another.

Check out tip #3. If cars.com who has millions of users to buy vehicles off their website. I thought they mislead their users that all gas is the same. |
