M5 versus E63 AMG S 4matic
Hey guys, recently I got offers for a trade in my MSRP $113,000 13 M5 for $75,000 (I bought it for 83,500) for a lightly used E63 S 4matic MSRP $115,000 for $102,000.
I love the M5 especially with the BMS tune, but I test drove the AMG in Seattle rain last week and the powerband was so much usable than the M5, not as much fun but still great, The E63 looks great outside and very appealing and more elegant, the Oem exhaust sounds better than my aftermarket one. my wife love it and support the trade if I want to. There is something inside of me that said no...was wondering if anyone did the trade that regret it or love it. I like both car but not sure if I should do it, any input??? |

I test drove the 14 E63 AMG, power wise is similar to M5. I do like the AMG suspension much more than the M5, even on Sport + mode. It is a bit more comfy for daily drive. The dash and interior setup looks a bit dated for the E63. The AMG does lose out on steering and road feel, no doubt about this at all.
In the end, looks like the price is kind of decent and if you can work on AMG # more, that would be worth another look. |

Since everybody has his/her own taste it's really up to you to see which one is more fit. It depends on what you are looking for and which part of a car is more important for you. I think the guys from Motor Trend have a good review on both cars; I'm not saying their conclusion is valid for you, but I'm saying comparing side by side can give you a good idea since these cars are totally two different animals specially when you are looking at RWD vs AWD.

was driving my friends cls63 for a whole day today
and this experience has just proven to me again not to buy amg and i am 100% M guy seats are super uncomfy, 20 minutes driving and my lower back was killing me gearbox switches gears itself even in sport+ and M mode command is so outdated those wing mirrors, the actual shape is so bad, that passengers actual mirror is obstructed by wing mirror's plastic, i couldnt get position of passenger's wing mirror for the whole day, which i would feel comfy with to have quick glance to, i had to properly look into it every time! this big 5.5L engine doesnt help either, my m3 felt faster than this cls i am very disappointed with that car e63 is just different shape, but in general same car, so i would never change m5 for current generation amg maybe for s-coupe 63, but thats complete different league! and i have not driven it! |

Everything I read in the automotive press has cars like the e63 measuring up the M5. Never the other way around. Nuff said.
But i understand the need for all wheel drive. Then its a different animal all together. I decided to have the m5 and an all weather, all terrain vehicle for daily stuff and home depot runs. Happy with my choice

Okay, a little off topic, but I don't see it mentioned much... is it possible with Merc to get that damn clown nose deleted (i.e. the tristar logo)? I swear it keeps getting bigger and bigger. I'm not knocking the car, but those have become laughably huge imo. Reminds me of the expanding Polo shirt horse logos.

I appreciate all the valuable input, I will keep the M5. I asked my buddy yesterday and he said don't do it, for 100G I should pay 15G more and get a used V10 R8 lol

I test drove CLS63 2012 launch limited edition model sticker price 122k when I had E550 coupe 2010 and expected to be pleasantly surprised but my butt dyno didn't feel much difference whike when test drove the M5 then I was pleasantly surprised!!
So M5 all the way! But haven't test driven the AWD so can't speak to that sir... M5 does suffer from RWD but does shine at times because if it too ... for M5 RWD has become a 2 edged weapon - |

Dont go R8, M5 pulls os much harder anywhere above 60 MPH. Audi cant compete in that aspect.

That and I'd much rather drive 500 miles in an M5 over and R8.

Id rather do both
Have you driven a V10 R8? Its very comfortable and liveable. I own(ed) both (dumped the M5) and no question the M5 is more comfortable but again the cars are clearly apples and oranges.

what about M6 vs R8 since you have both? I know still apple to orange but how do you feel when you swap them daily/weekly?

Ive driven a spyder version which honestly i hated. Well then again any true car guy doesn't really like convertibles so that could be it.

Test Drove the 2010 R8 5.2 V10 today
I went and test drove a lightly used 2010 R8 V10 with 5K miles on it and I have to said the car in person is very beautiful. the power is very usable, handling around corners is definitely better than the M5 and E63 4matic S AMG, the pull is more noticeable than in the M5 even though I feel the acceleration is about the same. Finally, the sound is intoxicating remind me of the E60 M5.
However, I did not pull the trigger...yet. There are few reason why, 1st the car is out of warranty, no usb, navigation suck and small, rides rough and steering is way stiffer than the M5, the seats are not as comfortable, 465w sounds system versus 1200w BO, Transmission is between SMG and DCT, smoother than SMG but not as quick and swift as DCT, no keyless start, and other little amenities that M5 offers. Overall, the price was $120,000 for a MSRP $169,000 and they are willing to take my 13 M5 for $72,000. I think I will be staying with the M5 after all. |

The M6 vs the R8: The M still more comfortable and a more usable daily of course. Handling the R8 owns it- hands down but like you said apples and oranges. I did some heavy mods on the R8 including exhaust, tcu, and ecu mods. The car had about 45 awhp (this is a lot in awd) and it pulled strong from a dig even into triple digit speeds (140+). I would never ever own an R8 as my only car but I would 100% own an M6 as the solo driver. The M6 vs the M5: I found the M6 to be faster and had better driving dynamics. While the engines are the same the car was just more confident to push thru the turns at higher speeds and the pulls from 60-160 were incredibly awesome. I kept my M6 for more than a year which says a lot.
