Anyone else stupid enough to pull the USB ED Maps drive?
OK ... I should have known better, but I'm a recovering engineer like many of you. I had to see if my iPhone would work with the iConnect Drive functions and the BMW Apps ... even though I read it wouldnt in Europe. So I pulled the USB ED Euro Maps out of the USB slot and plugged my iPhone into it and yes .. it did not work. After I unplugged my iPhone and reinstalled the USB drive, the Nav System was asking for an "Activation Code." Of course, our Delivery Specialist did not give us the activation code for he entered the code prior to our delivery process starting. I'm sure I was told not to pull this USB Drive out during the delivery process but ... again that recovering engineer did not listen. Soooo ... now I'm in Austria without Nav on a Weekend. I tried calling the "Afterhours BMW Welt Hotline," where they told me to call my dealer in The States (I know for a fact my CA doesnt have a clue about this). I tried calling BMWNA ED and was told to call the BMW Welt Technical Support Saturday morning at the same number as the Hotline. I guess the USB ED Maps Drive method is too new for everyone for I must be the first non-listener to do this .... unless ... anyone else out there wants to admit doing this and can tell me what they had to do ... assuming not, I'm going to attempt to reach the Welt tomorrow and talk to a delivery specialist .. hopefully they can provide an activiation code and I'll be good to go. Lesson learned ...curiosity is a good thing but likely not all that good on an European Delivery experience!
If nothing else ... I always have my iPhone Map App (and Apple apologized the other week for that app!)!! |

I did the same thing but not to plug in the iphone.
Anyways, you have to turn your engine on. Make sure the USB drive with Map is plugged into the car. Then hold down the volume control knob on your center console for couple seconds for your BMW i-drive system to reset. I am not talking about the i-drive knob! It's the tiny volume control knob and press it down for couple seconds until the screen resets itself. Once the navigation system resets, you should be good to go and continue to use the map. Hope this works for you because it did for me! Last edited by puffysheep; 10-06-2012 at 11:27 AM.. |

Thanks for that very useful information - I was curious if there was a way to "reboot" the i-Drive. I assume this is how you do this.

I have disconnected the USB drive several times and when I started the Navigation system without it, the usual message about putting in an activation code would come up. But inserting the USB drive would remove that message. I think that activation code request is for activating the map that is installed which in this case means the U.S. map since that is the one installed in the car (with the USB drive inserted, the map in the USB then becomes the default map). The map installed in the USB is the European map and as such should not have an activation code or if it has one has already been entered.
