M5 F10 vs R8 (V10)
Note: not going to track
I Started a thread a month back on the V8 R8. Thank you all for the amazing advice, as the V8 was lacking in many areas compared to my M5. But I still have an obession with the design. Since my lst post, ive added downpipes and tune, and dynoed above 700Hp. But not im looking into the V10. Ive heard horrible things about the R-tronic, however they are always comparing to manual. R-tronic would be my only option, as manual are almost impossible to find. The M5's power is amazing, but the Sedan just doesnt do it for me, no matter what I do to it. Please let me know your experience and thoughts with V10. GT is not an option Here is a list of what my M5 has: 2013 M5 F10 Executive package Performance electronic steering wheel with Alcantara Carbon fiber interior Carbon fiber Paddles Agency Carbon fiber hood (painted to match, grills left CF) Vorsteiner carbon fiber fromt splitter Vorsteiner carbon fiber rear diffuser Vorsteiner carbon fiber rear spoiler Vorsteiner 21 3 piece staggered wheels Pirelli Pzero tires (2000 miles on them) (255 front/305 rear) Carbon fiber mirrors Meistershaft GTC exhaust with Catless downpipes BPM Stage 2 tune MSR Air Intake Carbon fiber side skirts |

Hell of a gun collection you got there ...
You did an amazing job with your car! Live the CF Parting it out when you get the Audi? Haha The Audi is an amazing machine.. I do not have much experience with it but I've been told it's not a DD by a few friends who do own them. If it's a weekend car, it's an amazing ride

The V10 R8's have really come down in price. The new 2017 R8 is just hitting dealers as of last week, which I believe should drive price down a bit more.
Finding a manual V10 R8 isn't that hard actually, but finding a manual V10 R8 with the right color and interior you want is the hard part. Vic55 has owned the V10 R8 before, you should consult him, but yeah it's more of a weekend car, with daily attributes. Definitely more DDable than a Gallardo too, but the R-Tronic you might regret. The shifts will seem so slow to you compared to your M5's DCT. I would say that's the main reason why the R8 makes a poor DD, because of that R-Tronic and then the manual is well a manual and not meant for stop light to stop light travel, or rather I should say is not in its element. The R8 has a lot of good things going for it though, good reliability, no engines dying that I've heard of, not like the S85 V10 in the E60 M5 anyway, good V10 sound, and great timeless styling. The cons will be poor fuel economy, outdated technology, and heavy by super car standards. The new 2017 R8 is over 100lbs lighter and was developed right along side the LMS R8 and shares something like 80% of the parts with it, which is pretty cool. Anyways, you just gotta do some research and find the right car. Good luck bro! Oh also, BPM is good tune, but yeah the F10 M5 is a big car, it's even too big for me sometimes.

splatter,
The gearbox you want, is the S Tronic, not the awful R Tronic, there is a massive difference. Not sure if you got the R8 V10 Plus over there ?, thats the one for you. |

I enjoyed my R8 for many reasons and only really disliked it for 1: the R tronic SMG style tranny. I literally did 3 TCU tunes to smooth it out and while it helped it still wasn't the fix that I expected after owning so many DCT's and even the ZF8's are better. But the car carries so much sex appeal and handles incredibly well. My 2012, even when I got it, lacked interior amenities that I expected for a 184k msrp car. The Nav was a bit outdated and the seats were more luxury based than sport based for the car they are in. I did the GMG race exhaust and GIAC tune and the car ripped in the higher rpm's plus it sounded like an F1 race car. Its definitely an 8/10ths car though because the power band is all in the higher rpm's. It was a fantastic car and lasted almost 3 years in my stable. If you can swing a 2014 or 15 you should be able to get a pretty good deal on it and an S tronic tranny aka DCT aka DSG.

I have both cars currently, a 2011 R8 V10 with the R-Tronic transmission and a 2013 M5 with the DCT. My R8 has a custom exhaust, tune and many other mods so it is a different beast than the M5. I bought the M5 as a daily driver so my intentions is not to mod the M5 so it is pretty civilized. The R tonic in the R8 is not comparable at all to the DCT in the M5, you can definitely live with it once you learn how to drive it properly but going from the DCT in the M5 to the R8 R-Tronic it makes you really appreciate the dual clutch transmission. The R8 is a terrific car, just beware it gets TONS of attention which get annoying. My wife did not believe me until we went to dinner one night and people were literally hanging out their windows taking video of it in the freeway. I enjoy having them both in my garage for now and am trying to stay away from modding the M5, we will see how long that lasts.

No credit checks, no previous purchase history with the dealership either. Just took a copy of driver's license / insurance. Just better salesmanship? |
