Does new Battery=loss of coding?
I'm taking in the M5 tomorrow for its 17K oil change and was told that I needed to have the battery replaced and new microfilter. I haven't had any issues with the current battery, but they said it's an upgraded battery or something. So, my question is will this delete the coding I had done or does that take a flash back to stock?

No it will not delete your coding. Unless...some of the modules/ECU's need updated programming. You could potentially loose the coded data in those modules.
If it's an upgraded battery, say going from 90ah to 105ah, they will code the new capacity in E-SYS. When they do the battery registration, that will most likely be done in ISTA+/Rheingold.

New Battery - Low Battery Messages
I installed a new battery in my 13 M5 about 8 months ago. Ever since then, I will get a message stating "Low Battery". I trickle charge for two days and my charger tells me that the batt is fully charged. I never coded in the new battery. Does the DME assume that I still have the old battery in it or is it just confused?

You shouldn't get low battery warning, even without doing battery registration.
Battery registration is necessary because the charging system raises the current to charge the battery over time to compensate for the battery aging. Unfortunately, this means that when you get a new battery, it will essentially overcharge it unless you register a new battery, which does seem to shorten its lifetime according to people who never do the registration on other BMW models I've followed. You or anyone with ISTA+ can do the battery registration for you. |

ISTA question
In the ISTA software, there is a complete section on diagnosing and replacing the battery and specifically mentions registering the battery. I cannot find the section in ISTA on where to register the battery. Can anybody out there help with this?

After you identify your car through Operations->Read_Out_Vehicle_Data:
The procedure will come up: On left side select "Register Battery Exchange" and click "Continue" to start it. You will get options to register the same of different battery so choose accordingly, as well as whether changing from lead/acid to AGM and vice-versa. Click continue when you've got it configured appropriately. Note that the instructions on right panel say near the bottom that the car should then sit for 3 hours while it does open circuit voltage measurement to reinitialize to the state of the new battery. Best to schedule such that you can let it sit for 3 hours so the measurements are correct. This whole system is designed around a shop environment, where they would keep the car until after the registration is done. |
