You should buy something that's synthetic and ACEA A3/B4 which is typical for BMW and I think German cars in general. Don't mess with any C low friction oils, this engine is not built for it. Don't get involved with any attempts to get more horsepower by changing oil, ala the Royal Purple craze back in the E36 M3 days. RP wouldn't publish their HTHS numbers and I'm pretty sure that's because all they did was peddle low viscosity oil since regulations allow quite a bit of latitude in the actual viscosity delivered vs. labelled.
