F10 M5 2016 - Suspension / Steering Noise?
Hi, in my 4th month of ownership 2,000 miles - loving it so far. More so now it's fully run-in!
Wanted to get people's thoughts and feedback on a couple things I've noticed. I'm not sure if it's a fault, or a characteristic of the car. At lower speeds, over varied sized bumps (most noticeable over small bumps because road noise transfer is lower) I can hear a very dull knocking noise. The only way I can describe it is a hard plastic sports bottle moving about in a hard plastic tray. I'm finding it difficult to pin-point it, but at a guess it sounds like it might be coming from the drivers side somewhere. Having read forums it sounds very like the problems experienced with suspension in earlier models before the facelift. Are there any documented cases of the same problem with the latest model? My other issue is to do with the steering. We have a few cobbles in Edinburgh so it's easy to replicate. Over sharp slow speed bumps there's sometimes an audible rattle / knock from the steering column. Seems more obvious when the steering is off centre. Not sure if it's related to the other issue. I've had it looked at by BMW, first time at the run-in service, then again specifically to look for a problem - but apparently no fault was found. Any feedback much appreciated. Andy |

SUBJECT Rattle from Rear Suspension over Rough Road Surfaces MODEL F10 M5 With the S63T engine Produced to 3/2013 SITUATION A rattling noise is heard from the rear suspension over rough or uneven road surfaces. This noise may be more prevalent when the Electronic Damper Control (EDC) setting is set to “Comfort” mode. CAUSE Rear coil springs may create an unfavorable contact noise during suspension travel, due to the progressive characteristics of the M5 suspension. CORRECTION After verifying customer’s complaint, replace the rear coil springs (refer to the Spring Table in EPC) and both front and rear auxiliary dampers for the shock absorbers (bump stops). I'm in Glasgow and have a 2013 F10 that Ive had back at the dealers with no fault found also for suspension noise. Ive only got about 18000 miles on it to date and I have to say I dont notice it as much now .. whether Ive just zoned out, or its gone I'm not sure ?, it was only noticeable at slow speeds on very un even surfaces for me
Edit .. mine was built in August 2013 so I assume it was modded ? Last edited by Bigmuz7; 08-10-2016 at 02:39 PM.. |

When you have issues that have a TSB, its always a good idea to walk in with it printed out otherwise they just do guess work and don't bother looking. Just my experience.

I know the M cars are arguably more susceptible to odd noises due to the set-up and tolerances etc - but presumably its reasonable to expect in a brand new M5 there shouldn't really be any audible knocks or rattles? On any surface (within reason)?
I'm just trying to determine if I'm being unreasonable in taking the car back again - so far I'm being told there's nothing unusual or faulty. I agree its best to do some research before taking a car to be diagnosed. I'd be interested to hear of anyone else with the same problem in a post 2013 model when the dampers & springs were supposed to be revised. I tried the suspension in sport plus mode this morning and the noise didn't seem as obvious on smaller bumps. Difficult to tell over larger ones since you always get a thud from the tyre anyway. Still get the noise from the steering area over what I would describe as small slow speed 'sharp' bumps though. Are the TSB's available online? |

Did you go with 21s? Because of the lower profile on 21 I did hear more road noise Could also be tired of you went with a different brand. May ride noisy

Interesting no-one else seems to have noticed any issues with knocking through the steering. Making me think even more that I might have a faulty component somewhere. |

Hi, adh325, I know this is a good while ago but did you ever get a resolution to your suspension noises?
I have a 2014 car on 20k miles just started 'knocking' over uneven sufraces/ridges at slow speed. Just looking for any advice before a visit to the dealer! |

The culprit may be those rear suspension aux s/a bushes mine make the odd quiet noise at times over road irregularities and disappear when switched to sport mode.Dealer says all is fine but the pro '13 bushes are not expensive and not difficult to replace.
