Drivetrain Malfunction
Happened twice yesterday and persisted till this morning on the way to the dealership. Took it to dealer this morning, and it seemed like it registered a Electronic Damper Control (EDC) Fault. The warning is gone for now, so they let me take the car back and the warning hasn't come up again yet. First time this has happened to me. They're going to do a full diagnosis on Tuesday (they ran a "short test" today). We'll see what happens! |

Yeah any number of things can cause a Drivetrain Malfunction. There are a ton of sensors in and around the engine and one of them could be setting off the Drivetrain Malfunction message. If it keeps persisting then there's either something legitimately wrong or it's a faulty sensor.

I got the same thing today. Was at the dealership as it turns out. Car started rough, then sputtered, then shut down. Tried it twice and it just kept dying. Shut it down, locked it, and when the SA came out it started with no issues. Was fine rest of day. Car more like a computer anyway so figure it just rebooted...

Turns out mine was a one-time EDC fault, "full test" resulted in no faults additional faults / weird results. Guess we'll see how this runs the next few months, I have another two parts on order - a wheel hub (drivers side) and a new high pressure steering hose.

Fuel looks low. Mine did that with 77 miles left on the range. Wouldn't fire up until I added another gallon of gas. Hasn't happened again as I never let it get past half now out of paranoia

Here we go again.. While driving normal speeds, waiting for oil temperature to hit...
Another drivetrain warning, seems like it's going to be a hard code this time. Car is in valet mode, can absolutely feel no turbo boost at all. Drivetrain warning has stayed on all day. Last edited by Protious; 07-13-2013 at 09:08 PM.. |

They are currently re-programming my car.. When they plugged it in, it gave a boost controller fault, boost blockage fault, on top of the EDC fault. The BMW computer immediately told the tech to recode the car..
Hopefully the new programming fixes it up, otherwise.. Makes me wonder what I blew up. |

The M5 will have a hard time being a classic car, so many electronics that can fail down the road. Yikes. Glad everything is working now

Question for the thread
Hello all. I have a 2012 528i with 98,000 miles. Have had the drivetrain light come on 4 separate times in the past 7 weeks. All 4 times, the car has lost power and I've pulled off the road. Turned off engine. Waited. Restarted and driven to dealership for service. Here are the work that has been completed and days in service.
1st: Software update: 1 day 2nd: Timing belt replacement: 9 days 3rd: Exhaust fan replacement: 2 days 4th: Turbochargers replacement: 10 days My concern is that it is going to run out of the CPO warranty at 100,000 miles and the problem will persist. Any insight is welcome Thank you |
