concerned about V8 cars resale value in 5 years or more.
Hi everyone.
I am planing most expensive car purchase soon but one thing makes me reluctant to pull the trigger. With the expansion of EV's, better technologies to produce batteries, more charging support and increasing gas prices, do you think that dumping $60-$80k into m550 with big V8 is the smart idea considering possiblity of the major shift in consumer preference. I generally change cars every 5-7 years depending on mileage and maintenance cost so the resale value is an important factor. Interested to hear opinions. Thank you. |

I think it's a brilliant idea personally and therefore I'm taking delivery of our X5 M50i next week. I'm meeting people pretty often that are going for the up spec high performance ICE engine now because in several years we may not be able to have that option. If not now, maybe never?
I'm thinking that EVs purchased today are going to take the biggest hit on resale in several years because of how rapidly that technology is improving. Who's going to want a 5 - 7 year old EV that has maybe only 30-40% of its battery life left and has a range of 325 miles when a new EV then will have a 500 mile range and much more rapid charging. I plan to be making noise and destroying tires for the foreseeable future! And before some fellow environmentalist goes looking down their nose at me, the emissions data show that you're polluting more by running your 2 stroke weedwhacker for 30 minutes than my V8 will on a several hundred mile drive. Giddy up! |

V-8 SUV's are everywhere, nothing special. Now a V-8 M3 is going to be.

The changing market was one of the motives to get my M760i, the V12 is to be no more, and I intend for this purchase to last 10-12 years. By then EV's will be sorted out, until then I want to drive "the best". The car market is going to suck in 5 years. EV's sill still be not ideal, infrastructure will still be in turmoil, and gas engines will be undergoing change as well. Remember what came after the oil crisis and emissions changes in the 1970's? cars that sucked... This is a new version of the same fundamental shift.

ICE isn't going anywhere. We will not have the infrastructure nor capacity to support even a 50% EV population. So don't worry and buy the car you will enjoy today.
I live in S. Florida and see funeral processions every day. I have yet to see the Brinks truck at the back. So I know you can't take your money with you.

Exactly this.
I know people who purposely got V8's, even older ones, just because it has a V8. They didn't get something newer with turbos, or hybrid tech, or even as far as going full EV. It'll be almost as valuable as people keeping and/or buying their favorite manual car to hold onto for a very long time as they become obsolete as we get into the next phase of automotive evolution, it being all EV. I don't think you'll be making a mistake. If that M550 is what you want for the long haul, definitely do it. |

We can't predict the future on what people will want 5-to-7-years from now but history has shown us that any BMW V8 will drop like a tank. And not from V8s going out of favor but rather from BMW's history with producing V8s that require enormous expense to keep running or repair. I will only sell a V8 BMW to a friend if he gets a warranty to cover his anticipated period of ownership. Even so, one bought an M550i and BMW had to replace the engine before it hit 4,000-miles. He's now leasing an M8 and only recently completely overhauled his M3's V8 in order to keep it another 15-years—out of love!

I'm trying to line up a purchase for a V8 powered car now to pretty much be a weekend car. Having a very hard time deciding if I should just snap up a Mustang or go the German route (more money, more problems).

I am very observant and I can probably bet when the OP is on his deathbed, that he’s not gonna say: “Shit! I never should have bought that fucking V8 BMW because they said EVs were going to take over.”

Certain "special" v8 cars will be valuable in the future. Gas will remain high for a long time to get people to transition to electric. M550 is a nice car, but won't be anything special In the future IMO.
I bet they tax the shiite out of ICE cars eventually. I'm also betting no one will actually own their electric vehicle, but more on a monthly subscription plan. Last edited by TR930; 06-12-2022 at 08:29 PM.. |

Garmin watches and the like are incredibly popular right now, I have one, most of my friends do, and so on. It lets me record activities, provides data, notifies me of messages and calls, etc. I went a long time without wearing a watch...then a few years ago I "won" this in a charity auction, but I haven't looked back. The watch industry is alive and well...but if you didn't adapt...you died. The real answer I think is whether or not you (the product) exist in a niche. If you don't exist in a niche, it's evolve or die. Someone or something will always come along that can do things better than you, faster, more efficiently, cheaper, etc. The real success is to keep developing new stuff, getting into new markets, reaching new customers (as far as demographics), inventing new processes, and so on. Just sitting around producing the same widgets year after year is a sure-fire way to eventually have the floor collapse out from under you. Maybe not on your watch, hehe, but at some point down the road. So then there's the niche. The niche doesn't need to be competitive, people will buy it at pretty much any price. Either no one else makes a competitive product, the uniqueness can't be matched or the loyalty and other perception factors are so high it's not worth challenging unless you are going to lay out incredible amounts of money and time, well beyond any payoff you'd see for likely decades. There's always a lot more businesses/products that *think* they are a niche that really aren't. It's the issue of not being able to see the forest for the trees and it's simply really hard to do this when you are inside of an organization. So V8 cars isn't a "niche", it's nothing special, but certain models with certain features might be and they might gain value in the future. V8 M3...possibly. But the same idea above applies...just because it's a V8 automobile, even one in good condition, doesn't mean it's special.

Not that you should or shouldn't get one. Mustangs were lagging behind for many years, but here towards the end they finally have some good chassis offerings for stuff besides drag racing.

Exactly my thinking. I don't care much about the stigma as it would be a weekend fun car, and something I can tastefully modify without caring about how it drives/sounds when I'm sitting in traffic. My RS5 is "posh" enough for the daily/business duties.

I think that v8s, especially manual enthusiast cars are probably going to go up as EV's take over. If its a commuter v8 it'll probably tank. In a future of expensive gas and EVs probably being faster at the stop light you are going to have to really want whatever a ICE car has to give. That means something that is more of a weekend car. Now a M550, I'm not sure if that will fit the mold of desired cars in a EV world. It'll have a v8, but its also not a M5. Still an automatic too. Ultimately it is a compromise car. I mean its still a very nice car and all, but If its my weekend car it better be freaking cool. |
