Add 1 liter of engine oil
Hi, I had my oil service a few months ago on my F10 M5. I got a message saying " engine oil at minimum level, please add 1 liter of engine oil at your earliest convenience"
Prior to my oil service I started getting this message every 3 months or so. There's no leaking oil on my garage floor. Is this a normal occurrence? |

Rather than months, how many miles are you getting between adding oil?
If you are getting anything over 1,000 miles (roughly) between top-offs, I think BMW considers it within their tolerance. Less than that is borderline and may be a mechanical issue. What oil and weight are you using? I ask because I was topping off after every 750 miles on Motul X-Cess 5W-40. I switched to Liqui Moly Molygen and now see about 1,500 or more miles in between. That might've had nothing to do with the oil, such as something not being tightened properly during a previous oil change. But the change made me feel a lot better. |

happened to me today - got the message to add 1 litre of oil as the level was low
i had to stop at a service station and added the best i could find, then i carried on although i was conscious these cars consume oil i still got upset as i recently changed oil and filter (2000 miles ago) never happened to me before so i will be investigating with the help of my local BMW service partner just to make sure i am not risking anything however it crossed my mind that 5W-40 could not be the best option for me i have booked another oil change and requested a recalibration of the sensor just in case. i will ask them to use the OEM bmw oil spec and monitor the situation |

I hear you, but for me it is highly uncommon and even alarming to get the low oil warning.
I thought about horror stories, valve stem seals, piston rings, oil pumps etc.. In this instance think I might know what happened. My mechanic used a low quality oil - a cheap brand named Comma Oil - 5w 40. I will try the Castrol Edge 0w-40 as per BMW manual and see what happens. Apparently the 5w-40 is not the very best spec money can get for this car.. |

Comma is for Vauxhalls and Fords def not for our M's, I only use Edge 0W40 knowing it will get to those tight gapped rod bearing spacings quick, 5W40 is thicker and takes longer to circulate from cold.
