I purchased a 2015 with 38k miles. Noticed the occasional buzzing shortly after purchase. I guess I’m lucky since I only notice the buzzing about 5% of the time. Definitely seems to be related to a certain type of road surface. Pisses me off when it happens. I start pushing on different parts of the column trying to figure out where it’s coming from but no luck. I have a warranty, but the issue is so intermittent I’ve been avoiding dealing with it.

Here's probably why. The steering wheel vibrator is just a cheesy motor with a lopsided weight on it to make it unbalanced and provide some jiggling.
I think it is held on with this enormous metal spring clip which I suspect is either vibrating from the road or passing along the road vibration to something else. I bought this in hopes of replacing it to fix the noise issue but it is such a piece of crap I can't believe this costs about $130. Don't anybody else waste money on this. I haven't taken the wheel apart but I'm guessing the solution is to pad everything to avoid vibration or else remove this thing completely. |

I have the same issue. I tried insulating it and it threw an Active Blind Spot Detection Malfunction. I removed it and drove six days with the rattling but no malfunction. I removed the vibration generator and the malfunction came back. My next step is to pad the contact points of the vibration generator and steering wheel. It seems that any kind of obstruction of the generator will throw a malfunction.
I also brought it in but they couldn’t get a key read on any faults. The malfunction goes away if I turn the car off but comes back every other day or so. Will report back later with my next attempt at a resolution. |

Well, in 9 month of ownership so far i drove the car maybe for 3. In and out of dealership, currently BMW UK took over the issue and collected my car from dealer to their UK HQ. It's been two weeks now... and I am still driving their awful X5. No resolution so far, in a meantime I still pay for the car, insurance and tax...

I'm thinking of removing the vibrator and using a resistor to prevent detection and subsequent malfunction fault codes. Similar to EDC delete with KW V3.

I have the same issue. 3 years ago. They said it was the lane departure weight that was cracked and replaced it. It stopped making the noise and restarted last year. BMW told me it was the turn signal frame and replaced it at 25% of the cost, even though it was under warranty. I picked up the car. Same. I returned it and they said it was the steering column hitting something. They foam-padded it and it is not as bad, but is still there. Ruins the experience. I am not sure if it is good or bad that I am not the only one.

Im having this same issue and its the vibrator
when i took it out the noise stopped.. but like others say it throws a lane departure error since its unplugged. so i used padding and tape to insulate it from the wheel. it helped about 50% the noise is not as pronounced but its still there and im OCD so this is not gonna fly with me. next thing im going to try is to remove the metal retaining clip all together and just use electric tape and tape it around the wheel and report back if that works. If there was a way to code it out that would be best fix. and just take it out. |

When I had this issue back then, they had replaced the entire steering rack and all associated parts with it... but i believe the main issue came from the steering rack and just over time wore out. If I can find my documents, I will upload it

I think that would be great if you do that information may help some folks. Most people just have this noise from the wheel/column and not the rack. If you read back on the issue, people were complaining about this when the cars were new. My 2014 has done this on certain roads since I got it in 2017 at 16K miles.

Fixed my buzzing noise that I was getting at speeds over 60 over bumps and rough roads from the steering wheel. It’s the metal clip holding the vibrator in place. I simply taped to to the wheel n no noise!!

Taping the weight elimated the noise for me also, but now I have check control messages about blind spot detection disabled because of malfunction. Still need some better solution.

I take it no one ever got a fix for this? My 2015 LCI comp has the same “charm” over certain road surfaces.. annoys me quite a bit..

I heard mine buzz briefly a few days ago at 75, this thread jinxed it... It was on groomed concrete on the interstate, so there were some vehicle harmonics going on

I'm also dealing with this same issue in my 2015 comp at 75k miles. I was really annoyed at first but ended up getting used to it... lol a solid fix would def be nice though.

what i ended up doing is just turning off the button that controls the blind spot warning and i just taped up the engine motor in the steering wheel so it does not move and that it
the thing that sucks is that i dont have the light up triangles in the mirrors when cars are in my blind spot but i would rather not have that then deal with the annoying rattle that make this car seem like a civic. i know how to use my mirrors so i sacrifice the comfort feature to get rid of the noise |

I updated my steering wheel from older 2013 version to the 2014+ version and this buzzing issue came around.
1.) didn't happen with the smaller 19" winter wheels 2.) did happen with 20" stock wheels and both PSS and PS4S tires. My solution similar to discussed, remove metal clip... use double sided foam tape... and... *** trial & error tension with zip ties *** tension was to keep enough pressure lane departure would work and be felt, and no noise. It took 2-3 tries but I got it dial in. Good luck, Andrew |
