F10 M5 Brake Change At Home ?
Hi guys....
My front and rear brakes need doing on my M5 (2014) but BMW are closed and my go to garage is also closed, a guy up the road said he can do them but I thought it had to go to the professionals to go on a computer and something also to do with the rear brakes as electric parking brake. I would wait for a garage etc but use the car at the moment doing 210 miles per day ! Any advise would be more than welcomed. |

For the parking brake you just disconnect it and you can manually wind it back with a torx bit. Otherwise it's a regular old pad change. |

I was worried he would mess it up, I do over 200 miles a day 6 days a week in this lockdown and would wait but can't go past Thursday really. |

The fronts were easy... I did those in Dec. Rear has some extra steps, but the same as other f chassis’s. Watch this DIY.
It was easy just extra steps. Also you need a thin 16mm (15mm) open wrench to take off the caliper. |

All done and if you haven't bimmerlink for resetting the park brake motor make sure you have straight narrow shaft torx key for the tiny torx bolts on the park brake motor enclosure as a socket sticks out too much and can't go in straight against edge of enclosure, will slip and be a problem.
Finally a brake service reset on the dash completes the operation. * It's obvious but as you're pushing the calliper pistons back empty the brake fluid a bit from the b/fluid container as could overflow and go on the paintwork and you don't want that. Just had the b/fluid changed before at the dealers and knew I had to do it with the level being near the top. Last edited by M5Rick; 09-03-2024 at 04:25 AM.. |

So as far as the front pads are concerned it's less involved than the rears and looks straight forward enough.
I've looked at a few instructional vids and found this one suited me better with this quick talking chap recovering from covid, using Brembo pads. Myself I'm using TRW pads OE marked which I purchased some time ago and will hopefully be less dusty than the original textar BMW ones. Like him I'll be doing it outside as garage is full up with stuff and ''weather allowing'' I'm all set up to go. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=bm...NFHgIn_RQ,st:0 |

No rain with a warmer day today so jumped on replacing the front pads and it was straightforward.
I spent a bit of time cleaning the caked on textar dust with a plastic spatula on the Brembo callipers finishing with brake cleaner and care is needed to replace the newly shod callipers back on to the two studs making sure the flexible brake fluid pipes are in the right position to be snicked back into their holders and being careful not to damage the calliper paint, I reused the original brake wear sensor as why replace when there's nothing wrong with it. Using brakes sparingly with the new pads to blend them into the discs for about 150 miles. * Oh let's not forget punching out the brake dusted blocked drilled holes in the discs, I used a flat headed punch tool from a set I used to drive the pad pins out and cleaning out any loose rust from around and from the top of the discs finally finishing with brake cleaner spray on the outside and inside of the discs too which you can just reach, finishing off with a large replacement M sticker on the callipers replacing the faded ones, might as well do a proper job that takes longer while you're at it. Needless to say the brakes feel better now with just a touch slowing the car up instantaneously. Last edited by M5Rick; 09-08-2024 at 08:22 AM.. |

Quite sure you don't need to wind, just use a regular caliper expander.
