F10 M5 Whine! HELP!
Hi everyone! I got a M5 F10 MY 2012. Just did a complete oil pan gasket replacement and valve cover gasket replacement. Upon taking the car back home, i heard an unusual (to me) whining noise. Its there on idle and low rpms. Asked the mechanic and the shop, they said its normal and its common for such whine to appear in m5s and m6s.
However, im sure before the car went in for the gasket replacements, i dont remember that i have such whining noise. Also, when they replaced the lower and upper oil pan gaskets, they do remove the oil pump. Do you think the oil pump might be faulty and caused this? Or is it possible that the oil pump is installed incorrectly? Is there any way to check if the oil pump Is in good shape without looking at it physically? Im asking for the dealer to check the oil pressure tomorrow. Thanks guys, any help is much appreciated. |

You'll have to look for it about couple months or more ago, someone had a whine like you describe and it was worn automatic duplex timing chain tensioners and the tensioner itself that he replaced and the whining stopped, can be done with engine in situ I think.
Check the oil level and what grade did mechanics put in should be 0W40 synthetic, Castrol Edge is recommended. |

Funny, i asked the dealer, they said to use 5w-30. Will look into it tho. But for the time being, is it fine running 5w-30? The manual does say 5w-30 is also acceptable. So is 0w-30 and 5w-40

5W30 is a cheap oil and is unsuitable for hot climates, your M deserves better.

Uploaded a video to youtube shorts so you guys can heat the noise.
This is me trying to play with the rpm around 1,5k-2k. Noise is definitely from the engine bay. Zero faults from engine. Scanned by ista numerous times and after numerous test drives. https://youtube.com/shorts/5swiGqN_3...tD92Szbd0G3ED8 Let me know your thoughts! |
