M5 F10 Deka Clutch issue

Hi ,

I have M5 F10 , FBO , Forged engine , pure turbos stage 2

Around 7month ago i ordered Deka clutch stage 2
My garage installed it for me and after around 400km when i go back home from 30km trip i can't put R anymore it just trying to put R i hear loud knocking and trans go in N , i drive aroud town to check what happen and notice 1gear gonne as well so i back home and leave car to my garage next day , they dissassembly trans and found out the clutch is completly burned

In december contacted the shop with i buy the clutch i explained the whole situation and they ask me to send back the clutch to deka i sended the burned clutch and in february i get new clutch not just plates as previous but now with basket as well (many thanks to Deka and the shop)

Today i pick up the car with installed brand new clutch also i put stock map on the car to be sure nothing happen to clutch

My home and garage is 30km away mainly highway i drive allmost all the time around 140-160 but at somepoint i pass car and put a little more power like really not much and then i notice when it downshift it think a second and after it engage clutch properly and start to give power so thats was strange so i repeated it again but this time i drive around 120km and put some power the car drop the gear but still think engage the gear a little rpm rev and engage second time the gear but now properly and then the car start to have some power but after the second time i get error trans temp too high so i slowed down and stoped at next gas station it was around 5km

Checked codes i get
Clutch temp - phase red
Clutch temp - phase black

It was just 30km after installing new clutch

Any idea what can be wrong?

Did they do a proper adaptation procedure when they installed the clutch?

Yes , and it complete without trouble also they do oil balance

Car was changing gear fine in town driving , problem start on highway speed

I put BMS Oil pan for trans better cooling , is this can cause problems? Low oil pressure under load?

Just had a similar issue with my S2 Deka Clutch driving from Tampa to Orlando. By the time I came to a stop and pulled in the driveway I only had 1st gear.

Im now after 400km

Upshift get better , little knocking but except that is fine

The issue is downshifting it feel like the clutch get engaged with delay and this cause slipping

I gonna make another 400km trans adapt and then will check how the clutch behave at WOT

I had my car towed back to Midnite Tuning to let them spend some time with it. I was having issues with downshift, seemed to skip odd numbered gears, but was also having some hard upshifts and an awful sound which I think came from the transmission.

I don't think they have started any work on it yet and since I am out of town for work for a couple of months it isn't a must have priority for me.

Looking forward to hearing more about your progress. Have you had any custom tunes done for the engine or transmission?

From the time i install the clutch i drive it on stock map and no trans tune

Im now after 700km on the clutch and upshift improved , upshift on low speed is like stock but upshift on WOT sometime feel harder from stock but it improved a lot from installation time

The issue is on downshift , clutch look like slipping :

If on 5gear and drop it to 3 with accelerator pressed the clutch start to slip for a second untill it engage properly , it feel like there is delay in engaging the clutch , i drive with ISTA connected to check the clutch temperature and clutch overheat very fast if i downshift like this , is enough to repeat this 2 times and i get temp warning

But if on 5gear and downshift to 3 but when downshifted to 3 gear the accelerator is not pressed for around second it look like it have time to engage the clutch and then the slipp and overheat dont happen

Also i checked and overheat not happening on upshift only downshift

What clutch do you have? Any mods?

They got the car on the rack but sadly no diagnosis yet. I am anxious to find out. I am out of town and told them no hurry but deep down inside we always want to know yesterday.

So bimmerworld had this experience. Check the image. They had an enlarged pan and had a limp mode issue. They added more fluid, so I guessing oil balancing again might help.

Here is a link to m4 and more, check
The dct section for this car:

https://www.bimmerworld.com/About-Us/F82-M4-GTMore/

They also have a quick fill dct adapter kit. It says for m4 dct. I asked them about f10m5 / m6.

I always assumed that there the fluid level had to be set just at the spill point to avoid overfilling but this sounds like it is ok to have a quart over.

I am definitely looking for a larger pan that will fit behind the splash shield though, which I guess means having extra fluid in the system as well.

Reply from Bimmerworld, they should work. Though extra capacity may be different. Below was the reply message.

“Yes, this will mount to your DCT and should operate just the same. However, we have not tested this on this specific transmission so the capacity may be different but if it is, it will be by very little.”

I am passing this along to my shop to see if this would be helpful. Since they have eyes on the transmission and clutches right now I am hoping they can provide some insight on how helpful this mod would be in this situation.

Since I am deployed for work I haven't been the best in checking in with my shop but I did just reach out via Instagram. I am 6 time zones behind home so hoping to hear something in the morning when I come back into my office.

Still out to sea for work but should be headed home in a few weeks. My indy in Largo, Fl has been back logged with work and says that they are now reaching out to Deka for recommendations/suggestion. That said they have not cracked the trans open yet.

Thank you for update i really appreciate it

1300km later still have same issue , i did trans adapt again without improvement
Slow downshift , hard knock when shift to R , strange noise from trans while change gear in town speed

But shifting UP in WOT look good

I gonna change trans fluid (FEBI 39070) and filters again maybe this will help because i really dont know at this point what can be the issue :/ thats my last hope without opening the trans again

I have asked my shop twice about the transmission filler mod mentioned above by Mdriv3r. No word yet back yet as my 2nd request for info was sent on Sunday evening.

I may just get the project gamma clutches and drop them in pending feedback from Deka on the Stage 2 issues.

Right on! Glad to see another sailor on here. Did you do B E/E and ET school in Great Lakes? I was a GM and did B EE and A school up there and then down to Va Beach for a rapid gunfire system C school. I had a ton of fun but all too familiar with having to cover down on work that skaters failed to do.
