Autocar: AWD F10 M5 Confirmed by BMW. AWD M Variants Certain for Future
BIMMERPOST NEWS Autocar: AWD F10 M5 Confirmed by BMW. AWD M Variants Certain for Future UPDATE as of 5/2/11: According to Autocar, BMW official have now acknowledged that a 4-wheel-drive model of the new F10 M5 is being prepared for eventual production. The AWD F10 M5 will join the standard RWD M5 as an additional model and should be good news for those who live in snowy climates. Original Post from 4/7/11: Many speculated that a AWD F10 M5 was possible in the works when BMW released the promo videos of the new M5 undergoing serious snow testing. It appears there may indeed possibly be an F10 M5 xDrive version sometime in the future. In an interview with Autocar, BMW M's head of research and development, Albert Biermann, indicated that “There will be some all-wheel-drive surprises on M cars in the future," apparently to satisfy demand from the US's snow belt. This would represent the first time that the M5 come in a xDrive variant. The only transmission details released so far for the concept F10 M5 is that it uses a Getrag 7-speed M DCT with M Drivelogic and has an Active M Differential, and standard RWD.

People in North America are "brain washed" over AWD. We will buy an AWD drive car here when they need it for about 4 or 5 bad snowy days in an entire year. Or consumers will buy a truck or SUV so they can go camping in the summer. Then they sacrifice for AWD the other 300 days of the year. The mentality here really suprises me sometimes.
And it's not BMW fault. They're just following the money. Last edited by Augu$tu$; 04-07-2011 at 01:20 PM.. Reason: sp |

Say goodbye to powersliding. Might as well buy an Audi. M Division is getting worse with each passing day.

Nobody said there will only be an xDrive model. Any AWD model would be in addition to the standard RWD model.

Not when you live in the mountains and no one paves your roads and you constantly have over 4 inches of snow on the ground. Why do M people get so offended when AWD performance cars are mentioned? For some of us it would come in very handy

this isn't just great for us up north but AWD on a high torque car is a good thing, look at cars like the TT-RS and GT-R and see what kind of acceleration they can get because of it, otherwise RWD might not be able to handle all the power.
As for people saying you don't need AWD in the snow, sure you don't, I have a C63 with snow tires and I am fine, BUT I would love to have AWD if it was an option, not just for snow, but ice!!! like the other poster said, this will most likely be an OPTION, not standard plus I would bet BMW does something similar to Audi where you can select the torque split and drive 20/80 if you want or 50/50 in the winter... Would love to see this on a M3 Sedan or GT as the M5 is a little out of my price range. |

Does not make a lot of sense to me in terms of what the M brand has stood for, but that appears to be changing with BMW going for a wider appeal. Using modified versions of the stock turbo motors instead of bespoke high revving NA motors keeps the costs down (including getting rid of the gas guzzler tax and any similar EU fines) and potentially could increase sales.

[QUOTE=E60orBust;9313762]Didn't BMW say no sedan for the next M3 car?
right, which is why I added GT, I am fine with a M3GT Xdrive, any other letters/words we can add to it Just wish it wasn't called that, just put M3 on it and leave off all the other crap... People will know its a GT and who cares if anyone knows its AWD or not |
