it will be intersesting to see how the MPG compare to the E63 and CLS63 considering they have similar power but the Merc has a larger engine... I thought I read that the CLS63 was 16/22 or something like that, which I figured would still have a gas guzzler tax. |

1) The X5 35i weighs 900 lbs more than the 535i (so if M5 is 900-1000 lbs lighter than X5M?) 2) The X5M has a 6 speed "sport" automatic, the M5 will have a 7 speed DCT 3) negative for the M5, the X5M and X6M have AWD which helps out their acceleration when trying to put this much power to the pavement. on a track these won't even compare, but on a drag, it could be a toss up depending on conditions. |

Is anyone else slightly disappointed at the power figures? I remember reading a quote from the M division "Do you really think we'll give it the same power as an X5?" Sure, he didn't lie but a measly 4kw and the same torque? Even this month's issue of my motoring magazine estimated power well north of 420kw...
Anyway still an amazing car but was expecting something that could pull 0-100kph faster than that. Seems like BMW just chucked the parts bin engine to the M5 without doing anything special.

So based on the weight numbers from the press release, 4322 LB, its 1,046 lb lighter than a X5M and 1,002 lb lighter than the X6M.
BMW says the X-M's are 0-60 in 4.5 and say this is 4.4 you would think that dropping 1,000 pounds and getting a better transmission would drop more than 0.1 seconds on 0-60 times! also with fuel consumption, if its really 28.5 mpg imperial (average/combined) that converts to 23.73 US MPG which would be insane for a car this fast with this much power, you are talking Porsche fuel effeciency here! of course US standards usually rate import cars lower than in Europe, so our official numbers might come back around 21 mpg on average (like 18 city/24 highway), still amazing if that is the case |

To everyone who is complaining about power output and concerned about performance... this line in the press release is very telling.
"The 4.4-litre engine develops top output of 412 kW/560 hp at 6,000 – 7,000 rpm, while its maximum torque of 680 Newton metres (502 lb-ft) is on tap between 1,500 and 5,750 rpm. The rev limiter intervenes at 7,200 rpm. The rev band, which offers extremely dynamic acceleration between the arrival of peak torque and the availability of maximum output, is therefore almost three times as wide as that of the predecessor unit." Torque wins races, availability of that torque over a greater range wins races. Peak numbers (especially horsepower) don't mean a whole lot. I'm not a huge fan of the design of the vehicle itself (the cheesy side vents and goofy painted calipers) but the engine seems like a gem. Should be fairly efficient too based on the literature and once people reduce restrictions in the intake/exhaust. |

However, with a 1,000 lb savings over the X5M, expect the M5 to hit 11's in the 1/4 mile and sub 4 second range in the run to 60. Combine that with an average of 21+ mpg, a beautiful design in and out and the large tuning possibilities, I think you've got quite a monster in your hands. |

Also wanted to quote this portion...
"The turbochargers developed specially for the engine powering the new BMW M5 stand out with their particularly high level of compressor and turbine efficiency, and deliver maximum charge pressure of 1.5 bar." Does that mean its running 21psi already or that the turbos have the potential to do so? The turbos in the S63 for the X5/X6 M run 17.4lbs of boost so there isn't a crazy amount of room left on the table if the literature is correct. Granted 4lbs of boost wouldn't hurt and you would probably gain a decent pressure drop with better intercooler, catless downpipes, freer cat back etc. |

That is with imperial gallons.. In US gallons, it is more like 24mpg (which is still not bad).

M5 or m3 or 1m ftw, the 911 is real good, but the m5 will run u 100k plus.
The cts-v just like the c63 is just raw power, handling blows. M3 beat the c63 on track by 5 seconds on the top gear track. (not tryin to hate) |
