I'm not even close to being an authority there. Rodi would be your best reference, I think. But all the B&W images I've liked have been high contrast and sharp. Those are the two points I pushed in my version.

I also am no expert (having never taken any formal classes on photography). But my opinion is:

Higher contrast due to the interplay with light and dark inherent in B&W photos.
I think mid-tones become more important with a daytime or long-exposure photo (although still important in your example photo)
As far as the sharpness is concerned it depends on the look you are going for. One of my favorite pictures (I haven't posted it yet) is a photo I took of a co-worker out here in Iraq. I did a B&W conversion....and then "lo-fi'd" it for a grittier 70's vietnam era feel. So as far as the sharpness and such I think it depends on the subject and mood you are going for. Your photo for example is showing architecture so Sharpness is definitely important. My, albeit amateurish, .02 cents!

Yeah thats how I was going to do it too, just feel like the mid tones look a tad muddy... maybe I just need some curves adjustments there.

I went up to the summit of Mount Evans, Colorado to see what I could see. The road closes tomorrow. There are no guard rails and often no runoff areas, so a false move can easily lead to a 3000-ft roll down the side. It was in the 30s before the sun was fully up this a.m. and the roads will be icing any day, so it's time to close down.

Here's a mountain goat casually moving up the mountain at around 14,000 feet above sea level. There's a little meadow behind the goat, but you can feel the steep drop off after that:

could be my display, but i feel like the highlights are a little blown out. some recovery and a little contrast would do wonders. it's a nice image.

Isn't that a polar bear with the head of a goat? It looks huge!

How far away was he?

My right foot weighs 98lbs. Probably accounts for my familiarity with the local constabulary.
