SSP has received my basket last week and reported the obvious that my small set had burnt up. Other than that he has found no other issues. While the trans is out I am having the shop tear apart trans to clean all sensors/magnets just incase it was adaptation issues. Kris had mentioned that he saw some "grey" fluid on the clutches indicating metal and also said it could be low oil flow/pressure causing this whole issue. I don't feel thats any of the issues as I have had this trans and clutch out 3 times prior and each time clutch/fluid looked brand new. The last time I pulled fluid was still golden but the center clutch pack was definitely burnt and steel rings warped. I don't think it is a fluid flow/pressure issue as I have 0 issues before and I only changed the clutches to make more power...not because I was having issues before. Even my stock clutches looked great and I have Debated putting those back in and running the updated trans tune lol. I am still at a lose as to what the issue could be. As I stated in my previous comments it seemed to be shifting a lot better about the 650 mile mark but after new adaptations and around 700 miles giving it another test hit (Full throttle auto downshift) shift/clutch engagement felt a lot better than ever before but still slipped enough to warp rings this time! This is telling me something was getting better as when it felt like it was slipping before it wasn't causing any damage to the clutches or rings, this is confirmed after removing clutches twice while this was happening and observed no clutch wear/burns/warps. Honestly I wonder if these just need ALOT more miles than the 3-500 listed for break in. Depending on when Kris ships back to me I am hoping on having the car back together in the next 2 weeks for another go around. WISH ME LUCK! P.S the worst thing about this whole situation is all the wasted fluid lol...should have went the FCP route! |

Glad SSP stepped up and sent out a new set but I wouldn't want to deal with having to pay to remove the transmission all those times. This has me second guessing going with SSP.

Me too! Kris has always picked up the phone for me during this whole process and has treated me very well. At no time did he try to talk down to me or immediately pass off the issue as my fault and offered alot of feedback with troubleshooting.

So I ran into another issue I believe was caused when the clutches warped on the last run. When the clutches slipped I got the errors for temp and to slow down pull off road and as I was doing so the trans was trying to shift down as I was slowing down. Gears started grinding on 2 attempts obviously as the clutches were toast. When we removed the megatronics to clean the magnets/sensors we looked around just to check things out and noticed something odd with the black plastic shift fork pads on 2 gear sets. Looked like melted plastic around the edges so after poking at them one came off and found that it had been melted all the way thru exposing the metal shift fork on the sides (looks like when it was trying to push into gear just chewed up the sides). Looked around and obviously these transmissions are not serviceable and ultimately due to a few plastic shift fork pads I had to buy a whole transmission to be safe. Hoping to have everything back together by end of Jan.
This is the shift forks out of an older dct but same difference. There's not a lot on rebuilding one of these trans so not sure if these plastic pads are replaceable. |

I love this car but hate BMW's shitty work on enabling rebuilds for simple bushings and plastic shit. Damn them and their partners to hell! It is wasteful and they need to be called out for it.
The Seems Legit Garage folks do a lot of dct work, have you reached out to them to see if they have any insight?

Update:
So after installing a new to me trans, repaired SSP clutches, sensors/magnets all cleaned everything seems to be running/shifting ok. Only have about 300 miles but on throttle downshifts seem to be shifting properly. I have only been pretty light on the throttle to induce downshifts so as I get more miles I will re learn everything and try getting more aggressive. Here are some pictures of the Messed up Shift fork pads. Found on 2 shift forks (2 pads each) and I suspect this was caused when the clutches failed and the trans was trying to force into gears as I was slowing down. I will note that I have owned this car for 4 years and have never had any trans problems or grinding so I do not believe this is pre clutch damage. Last edited by OgGinja; 02-24-2022 at 11:07 AM.. |

Damn man. You have balls putting those clutches in a new trans!
I’m going back to stock. My clutch symptoms were exactly the same as yours, with no explanation whatsoever. This is an expensive failure, not to mention frustrating for a supportive mod. |

Believe me I have thought about this long and hard...but to be honest since Kris physically had his hands on my clutches/basket to make sure everything was right eased my mind some so ill give it a second try. Yes it was costly but also have a $2500 clutch as a paper weight really doesn't set right with me either. Not sure how the warranty would work as he informed me he would not warranty this clutch any further. I do have a 30k mile clutch set and basket I can fall back on if I start having issues again.

F10 M5 shares the same DCT with F80/F82 and E90/E92 I wonder if the torque coming from M5 is too much for SSP clutch? I don't remember reading anywhere if M3s having that many issues with SSP Clutch. Just a thought

Are you asking me if I have read SSP website spec? Sure I have, doesn't mean it actually meet the spec. Like I said, I don't remember reading that many issues on those forums for SSR Clutches. Again, M5/M6 pushes a lot more torque. It was just a thought.

Won't continue to warranty? That is brutal and definitely a signal to me not to buy. I guess it is stock clutches for me and a tune for the transmission.
