Thank God, I know 5 and 6 owners are gonna love this. I expect to see tons of pages of excitement. Glad someone took the time to get this done, let alone share the experince.

I personally really dislike the idea of fake engine noise in the cabin. Sports cars are supposed to be loud and noisy... it's just part of the fun. If you want a quiet sedan for business or the family, fine... but when people buy M cars, they're looking for something with a bit more bite. Pumping fake (prerecorded sounds for the M5) into the cabin, just really ruins it for me.
It really makes me wonder if BMW is just trying to coax people and prepare them for electric vehicles that are silent outside but sound like good old-fashion N/A big-block engines via some fake stereo sounds inside! How lame. Maybe we can then switch some iDrive buttons to dial-in the sound of a Ferrari engine instead? If the cabin is well insulated, so be it. Maybe people like some silence in an M5 now and again... they always have the option of rolling down the window to hear the exhaust more clearly. Seems more authentic and has integrity over fake stereo sounds like your car is a video game.

Great to hear (no pun intended) that there is a solution to this problem that frankly shouldn't exist. Too bad that BMW has opted to add cost and complexity to their cars to introduce this unwanted feature. If they did their homework properly then the owners in this forum are the minorities and many owners are asking for the amplified sound. I find that hard to believe though.

^ that.
why isn't the disable an option in i-drive? Probably too illogical for the design team?

Thank you for the work around!!!
Fake sound is an embarrassment to our beloved brand, BMW should be ashamed of themselves for adding this feature. |

I had my car coded and V12 asked me to switch ASD off and I refused -
I love it Why not? It is hard for me to tell what's pumped and what's not! And again it is not fake it is prerecorded V10 or same Biturbo on a dyno and replayed accordingly actually I find it fun and very sleek... As long as car still sounds ok from outside and it isn't an electric car that sounds inside the cabin this way.... This car Bone Stock Is able to produce some nice noise in and out and if you don't believe me listen to the cold start!! My friend with Porsche Turbo 911 2009 let me turn his car on and rev it and my M5 was a lot better !! Actually the Porsche Turbo 911 was the one that needed this sound inside the cabin and the M5 without won't miss much but having it isn't but a perk - But totally agree that it should be switched on and off from the Menu with no hassle or coding!! As sure it is a Polarizing thing it seems - |

so what you are saying is that since the ASD enhances the exhaust note, I can retrofit it in a fully straight piped and catless e60 m5?!

Apologies for crashing this forum but I am struggling to find answers to my particular problem (with the X6 M50d) and you guys were kinda in the right ballpark.
My issue is slightly different. I installed an after market sound system upgrade (speakers, processor, amp, sub) without knowing the car had ASD. Now the cabin is filled with amplified ASD sound thats so loud it's unbearable! BMW dealers are useless, first having to look up what ASD was, then suggesting pulling the plug as suggested in earlier posts here. This just cuts ALL sound from the system. So, I actually still WANT ASD, I just want to know how to BYPASS it. Where to connect the amps, etc, that does NOT pick up the ASD feed. Any thoughts or suggestions gratefully received ;0) |
