They've cleverly integrated the boost diverter valves right there at the turbo intake/charge pipe outlet. From the more side photo, you can see the air boost pressure hose just above the white dot on the intake. Nice job M group! |

I'm trying to understand where all the plumbing goes. It looks like there are 4 intake paths with 4 air filters. Right before the compressor, there's a junction. If you follow the two outside tracks, it goes to what looks like an air box. The two inside tracks look like they go to intercoolers.
If they are going to liquid intercoolers, I'm wondering if that's because of all the trouble they had with the 335. At the same time, I haven't really heard of any trouble with the turbo V8s, but I'm not really sure about that.

Some very nice X5/X6 M engine pics are here, for comparison =>
http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5734439 One thing people seem to forget about the N63/S63 is it is an inverted setup - the intake is on the bottom of the heds while the exhaust is on the top. |

For starters it looks like the air to liquid intercoolers are AT LEAST double the size of the X5/X6 M intercoolers. Not to mention, the much larger diameter intercooler inlet piping and much smoother flow path into the intercooler...

Wow... every single inch of the engine bay is being occupied...if any M car ever deserved a power bulge/domed hood it should be the 2012 M5!

For comparison, here is a pic of the engine bay of the new 2012 E63, which gets a 5.5L V8 turbo. So, 1.1L more than BMW, although even with the Performance Package, power output will be no more than the M5, while peak torque at 590ft-lb will probably be slightly more than the M5. In base form, however, it is only 518hp and 516ft-lb.
Now we look forward to the next RS6, which will get a 4.0L V8 turbo rumored to be 550hp+. Throw in the XF-R with 5L supercharged V8 and this has the makings for one hell of a four-way comparison test. Actually, we could throw in the CTS-V too and make it five. |
