I like mechanical watches, sure there are digital watches (heck, my iPhone included) that keep better time, but I still prefer a good mechanical watch to anything else. And I prefer to row my own gears... sure technology can do it faster, but I just prefer it. Driving is not the same for me if I am not working 3 pedals. It's just not. Call me whatever you want, but it is what I like. I think it is a shame, and I find it curious that BMW is making this public so far out in the future.

If you guys all want a manual then you would need to get 3 of your friends who will already be buying an M5 to also get one in a manual. Even then, you have to understand who the BULK of the buyers of BMW's are. They are not forum members or BMWCCA members. They are the silent majority in these conversations. Also the M5 is no longer a hardcore sports car. Its not a larger M3. If you want a true sports sedan then the M3 is the way to go. As the BMW spokesman said the M3 will always have a manual because it fits the character of the car.

One of this M5's biggest differentiators (sp?) was that it came in optional manual. If the next gen M5 doesn't come with one then it just lost one of it's biggests assets and makes it much more similar to offerings from Mercedes and Audi...DCT's/Auto's w/TT V8's.
Disappointed to see that it won't be offered in manual..but BMW is a first and foremost a corporation and if they don't see a business case for it, then to bad for us folks who enjoying rowing our own gears. |

Oh come on BMW, keep the manual tranny in the M5 as an option, you can get back your development costs losses of the 6MT from profits in your other BMW products!

Has anyone else acknowledge that this car won't be out till 2018 or 2019? we have absolutely no clue what the state of petroleum will be at that point. The car will most likely be a hybrid of some sort if not more combined

I'm less concerned about the lack of MT in the next M5 than the overall trend of BMW to make each generation of their 5 series seemingly less and less driver-orientated. At this rate, BMW will just turned into Mercedes and M will just be BMW's version of AMG. Just a regular model with bigger engines and more powerful brakes. At that point, will BMW still be the "ultimate driving machine" if it is no different to Mercedes or Audi? There will be little point in buying a BMW as it will become just a generic brand with little distinguish it from it's competitors. But surely BMW won't fall to that level. They do realize what makes their cars so attractive.....or do they?

Manual gearbox is fun when driving BMW cars like the E30 or at most E36. Newer models are anti-drifting and thus have eliminated the fun part. For this reason I see no reason why we should get a manual gearbox when an auto, SMG, or DCT are way faster and more fun to use.

Rationally speaking, the automatic/DCT is superior in a car like the new M5 in almost all driving situations - no doubt about that. However, driving the manual well provides some measure of fun and satisfaction that you don't get with the automatic. It makes driving less boring.
Having said that, it's not easy to decide what to get on a beast like the M5. It does seem that the manual may compromise this highly tuned machine. I'm a big manual transmission fan, but I have this nagging feeling that it makes more sense in a car like the VW GTI or Subaru BRZ than the M5. |
