I call VA the "Cruise Control" State. It is the only place in country that I used Cruise Control and the right lane the whole way when driving through it. I hate driving through it. At least they have some 70 mph interstates now.

Nope. They're legal in CT. And yes, I know they're not legal in DC. I meant states. You also can't speed in too many places in DC.

A ways back, I hit 125mph in a 1987 325is going down Lincoln Blvd. (a one-mile stretch of road with no signals) near LAX... Looking back, it was a pretty stupid thing to do, especially with three passengers in the car.

For all who don't know this is propaganda at its finest. The majority of cars going that fast street racing that cops see, they don't catch and don't expect to (unless there is a wreck).

Damn I wouldn't dream of doing that.
I did 120 once at night on an empty rural highway, was young didn't realize I could land in such deep shit. These Bimmers feel so planted and secure you don't think much of it.

If you mean at night, no... I did this in the middle of the day... Around 1pm.

I got a reckless in VA when I was in the navy. I made the judge laugh because I didn’t understand no contest. Got out with $77 exceeding and court cost.
I didn’t understand the severity thank goodness, in Florida it would have been a few hundred bucks and you’re on your way. |

I generally drive the speed limit +7mph on straightaways of populated roads. But, there are lots of places where you can go way over with virtually no chance of getting caught. One maybe extreme example, US-50 in NV ('America's Loneliest Road'). I drove it just a couple of weeks ago, had the M2 at 130 for a bit. I saw one cop car in like 6 hours on that road (coming in the other direction), there's no place for them to hide alongside the road, and usually no other cars in sight at all (with miles of visibility). And I go more than 20-25mph over the limit all the time around rural road curves posted at 45 mph or less, which is not even seriously pushing the M2 (w/ dry pavement and warm tires). Also, passing on two lane roads I kick it down to get around the other vehicle(s) ASAP, often ending at 100-120 depending the length of vehicle or string of vehicles I'm passing. I've only been pulled over once in total in 40+ yrs of driving, last year an Indiana cop said I was still going 60 in a 45 zone going through a town on a rural highway but I think he was wrong (I saw the 45 sign and was on the brakes to get below 50 before passing it) and he just gave me a warning.

Two stories:
Story one - I was 19 and headed to work one moring. I was running late and was speeding, not excessively but was speeding. I pass an officer who then turned around to pursue. As soon as I saw him turn around I took a left at an intersection and saw him speeding up to to catch me and do the same. What happened next can only be explained as a figure eight around the next two blocks and then a a reverse figure eight to end up at the same intersection again. Completely lost the guy and made it to work on time. Story two - Again on my way to work with 1.5 hour commute. On a state highway and encounter a college student in a 328i, I'm in a 2011 IS350. I'm trying to get to work, not running late but definitely not wanting to race on the stretch of road that we are on as it stays infested with state police. The kid in the 328i stayed right beside me. If I slowed down, he slowed down, I speed up, he sped up. It got old really quickly. When I finally had the opening in traffic, I floored the Lexus and got around around a few vehicles to get away from that kid. As soon as I let off the accelerator I see a state trooper, look down and I'm doing 120......it's a 55 mph zone. He hit his lights and I immediately pull over. The trooper was extremely cool. I explained the situation, he still wrote me a ticket but wrote it for 80 in a 65. He could have simply taken my license and taken me to jail. The next week I called the court clerk in the small town I was clocked in to settle up, $87.50. I got off very easy in this situation. Consider myself extremely lucky. In the 3 years I had that Lexus, I had been pulled over countless times for speeding but was let go with a warning or traffic school every time for the exception of this one. Laughably, the traffic school cop asked me the last time I was in there if I wanted to teach the class this time. |
