As for the new WRX, don't hold your breath that it's going to be anything very exciting. It's still based on the Impreza which is not a sexy looking car. The new WRX will look just as odd as the one it's replacing. To make it sexy would require an entirely new platform. The WRX will be based on the new Impreza which looks largely like the old Impreza.

Reveal is here:
https://www.subaru.com/2022-wrx Edit: Just watched it. So bad. More lateral movement.

I've given Subaru a break for a lot of WRX/STI releases in the past, but I honestly can't find any redeeming qualities about this new generation. The STI will be nowhere near 400HP. I'll be surprised if its more than 330. I'm very happy I bought my 2020 STI when I did. At least it has plentiful and well developed aftermarket support to get to where I want the car to be. And still feels like the "good old days."

It's just so terrible. I'm glad I got to own an '05 STi for 3 years, it was a highlight-reel car for sure. Everything after is just crap.

Those plastic fender moldings are hideous.

And it doesn't even end with that. The fender flares aren't even flares. It's like the plastic fender cladding is there to give the illusion but in reality it's not that different from a Crosstrek. Compare the flares to the previous few generations and it's obvious. Painted fenders wouldn't make this any better and would only exaggerate this.
I'm actually surprised I don't dislike the overall design as much as I thought I would, but they really cheaped out on the widebody/fender flare attempt and unpainted plastic sections. It's more of a disguise than anything.

Oof, that rear end is horrendous, a step backwards for sure.

How far Toyota has come for us to be able to say something like that about a Corolla. I'd never buy one for the same reasons that I can't buy an Elantra N. Just can't get on board with a Corolla or Elantra. But as competition to improve the cars I do care about, I welcome them to the market with open arms. But the new WRX/STI would need a significant facelift for that to happen for me. I'm good with my 2020 dinosaur. I'll be quite content on E85 and a bigger turbo.

Not to mention they blatantly try to distance themselves from the fact that their "Subaru Performance Transmission" is a CVT at all. There's nothing indicating it is one versus a torque converter automatic on the official release. When it's clearly laid out on journalism articles on the car. Subaru knew what they were doing calling it an automatic everywhere. Just call it like it is. Deliberate omission.

This has to be one of the strangest unveilings in years. The car looks utterly bizarre. It's like Subaru owns shares in a company that makes black plastic cladding that they are propping up. Those hexagonal black fender flares give the illusion of the car being lifted. The worst part is that this car will sell very well because Americans seem to really love the brand regardless of the product.

I was thinking this would realistically have had at least 290 HP/280 lb-ft to outpace the added weight. The adaptive dampers are cool, but if I understand correctly, only available with the CVT. And 2 colors? An ugly orange and a ho-hum gunmetal. IDK. This ain't it chief. I'm going to laugh my ass off if the new STI has like, 311 HP just to say it's more than the current 310. EDIT: Found more colors, white and a dark blue: https://media.subaru.com/image-galle...eryId=432&mid=

In my opinion, WRB stopped looking good after the 07 models. Anything 08+ looks much better to me in the darker metallic blue. The current gen has Lapis blue which is my favorite color that I couldn't find, and the previous gen had a great blue (I think it was called Plasma blue pearl) once the STI sedan was reintroduced.
Idk, I feel like Subaru changed the color and kept the name. It doesn't look the same as the 02-07 cars. Or at least it doesn't hit the same as it used to.

At least the interior looks better. I would hold out for the STi and see what they make of it.
