And I'm pretty sure that was billable - not including the admin. And unless I wanted a nice little chewing out on the other side from the partner when I was preparing the billing and our recovery was through the floor, there was no way I was getting more than 60 billable per week.

Well, have to make profit somehow right. And that was 60 billable I was referencing - to even somehow justify 60 billable, you'd be spending at least 80-90 working hours, because admin portion would suck up 20-30 hours of your week in those cases.

Sounds like she's at a small firm. You can't have that kind of life at a large firm.

She still does staff, manager and admin work though.

There is another local firm who's growing fast, already larger than her current firm and happens to be the same firm she considered prior to moving to where she is now. She was seated at the same table as their managing partner at a networking event 3 weeks ago. He offered her the shareholder position over their construction division (her specialty) with nearly double the salary along with equity partnership.

It's really hard for me to be objective when she tells me about these things. All i hear is that's one step closer to retirement for me, yet have to keep my mouth shut.

It's actually the staff, manager and admin work that makes it difficult to keep my mouth shut. Her goal is aligned with about 1/3 of the shareholders in her firm, the young ones of course. That goal is to become pretty much what this other firm has become in the last 7 years. Now she has the opportunity to just jump on a different boat retaining captain status. Except in terms of advanced thinking, it's like the difference between being a captain in the Cuban Navy (her firm) and being one in the US Navy (new firm). New firm already realized they have to pander to millennials if they want staff. They have to be accommodating with schedules in order to retain good staff. And they have to PAY good staff to stay. Her firm still thinks like Big 4 but they just aren't anywhere close to having enough status to treat staff that way in anymore. She and the young guns plan on being the winds of change. I hope that their efforts are fruitful, and before it's too late. Either way, I don't think she'll leave without at least 2 years of effort under her belt. So i'll just zip it for now.

Yeah, zip it for now - that's a good approach. She's familiar with the staff, the clients and she can make it work for now. If it is a sinking ship, she'll see it. There's nothing like trying to divide up the profits at the end of the year to make her come to terms with the fact that she doesn't much like the older partners and might consider a switch in a few years.

Partnership is probably one of the most difficult of business relationships - in my limited experience.

Though I feel your pain re: double the salary. But it is an unknown - she doesn't know who will be working for her, who's good, who's bad, etc...I can relate to her reluctance to jump ship for now. But hopefully that other 2/3rds left are very close to retirement - otherwise she's just going to be beating her head against the wall I suspect.

Hey, she's the one with TWO cars. I only have one. Plus she has 4 bikes and i only have 3! She also has a treadmill and i don't. There is no equality at the Tonka residence.

She actually knows a hand full of people at the other firm and has kept in touch with the managing partner off and on. Mainly at CPE and things like that. The managing partner at her firm is the one who hired her. There is about 1/3 of the partners to be retired soon. And there is talk of buying out one of the batshit crazy partners. The managing partner is somewhat of a question mark. He's old school and wishes they were Big 4 which is never going to happen. He's been coming around as of late though. He's only been firm president for a year now and the outgoing president isn't fully retired yet. Once that happens I'm guessing she's going to see how much / quickly change is implemented and go from there.

She wants to be part of building something. But I'd imagine it's hard knowing that you could be doing the same somewhere else with more help and a much more modern tool box.
