so add an exhaust?
Complaining about exhaust sound, like they dont make catless dp, or aftermarket exhaust.
I can find stuff to knock the E60 M5 all day long, but aftermarket would make it all better. I would never buy a car without a mod budget. About 2015 i will be looking to get the 2011 M5, 20x11's out back, and software! |

I think a lower redline, with gobs of low end torque is better suited for the M5 compared to a high rev NA V10. Not so sure about a lower redline/high low end TQ on a smaller M car like the F30 M3. We shall see...

It does not sound as good as NA, but still not that bad for FI. Sounds better than RS6, but of course the M5 has to be heard live with production exhaust.
IMO best sounding V10s: 1. Lexus LFA 2. Porsche Carrera GT 3. BMW M5 (E60) What is sure, no M5 (F10) or RS6 V10 will sound like this M5 (E60) OneandOnly Sound. That high power output on the e92 M3 is great if you are driving on track and can keep the revs north of 5k, but for lively daily driving with the occasional track day, I prefer the power/torque characteristics on the i-6 e46 M3. The issue of low rev power seems to be exaggerated further by the e60 M5's NA v10 - the car suffers from the same high rev power production need. Given that the M5 is a daily-driver sedan (albeit one with amazing capabilities and race-bred genealogy), it still, ultimately, represents a sedan. If you want a high reving, high power output motor for the track, you can get a much more capable and less expensive trackable ride in the m3. Bottom line, given the demographic of M5 buyers and the expected use of the car, a FI motor provides many advantages (including power at the low end of the revs, where the car will spend most of its time and improved fuel economy). Since the fellas at the M division keep bumping weight in the 5er, they compensate with power. At 500bhp v10, going higher with a naturally aspirated motor would result in a likely continued diminishment of fuel to levels below that of reasonable consumption (obviously reasonable is relative, but I think 12 mpg in a luxury sedan, regardless of how capable, is verging on outlandish but a real possibility if the F10 M5 added a naturally aspirated 550 bph v10). All in all, the shift to FI is a break from tradition, but isnt that the point of engineering evolution? You will get more power, more luxury, and more performance with added economies in fuel consumption - and that is what M5 drivers are looking for (ie. its not simply the best performance wins mentality in the 5 target market). |

I personally have my doubts when looking at the body roll of the new M5'er, ow well, it's still in development, it'll get tweaked out, right?
Oh and about the exhaust sounds; If BMW goes out of its way to cover up the final design of the bodywork, don't you think they'll have some special sound-dampening hood for covering up engine sounds? I mean, engine sounds ARE a big part of performance cars aren't they? Last edited by Pierre; 06-01-2010 at 07:58 AM.. |

Is it just me, or is one of the LED rings on the driver's side blinking starting at 0:48 into the second video, and again on the track right after...

The V10 in the E60 M5 is what made me lust after the car so much and eventually buy one. This new F10 does not get me excited at all. IMO it's a step backwards... Yes I'm sure the F10 M5 will be quicker than the E60 M5, but the soul and passion is gone, which is why it will not be my next purchase.

Exactly the opposite IMO. The E92 is way quicker than the E46 at moderate revs, so much so that I end up using 1 or 2 gears higher for many situations. The I-6 power/torque characteristics are far more track oriented. And the V8 is way more refined at the same time. Maybe the F10 M5 versus E60 M5 change (low end turbo-charged wallop versus high-revs bash the redline) is a more understandable transition, given the different target market |
