Maybe it's a complex for some drivers, but for the rest of us, it is the overall driving experience and involvement with a manual that a DCT just can't compete.

Obviously the E60 MT sold in good enough numbers to justify making this an option from day 1 - this is a business and BMW knows this more then anyone. Porsche is not importing the MT Panamera so a good WIN for BMW in the sedan department!

Swore I'd never go anything but MT, however after 2 years now in the Z4 35is with DCT, I won't go back! On the track it is a no brainer, but even around town I love the quick shifts and rev matching. If I go with the next M3 I will go DCT as well. Oh, point of the thread, I would go DCT in the M5

I can't wait for the initial reviews on the MT. With so much power now available in these cars, it's going to be interesting how well/bad the MT works with the car. If I had the opportunity for such a car, I'd probably lean towards the DCT. But something like a M3, probably stay MT.

I'm all 6mt over anything else, but I think I'd go for DCT if I were to get an M5. That would most certainly be my daily, and I'd keep my manual M3 as a track/weekend car.

I wonder how many in this thread who say 6MT or nothing! have any intention of actually buying the car at all...
For me, reading that there will be electronic nannies overseeing the shifting in the MT is scary. |

When Dr. Nitschke says "Our European customers have understood that" it seems like he's saying European customers have moved past the "Real Men drive MT" image/complex and thus, have been more receptive to the new technology. Americans can be silly sometimes! Once again i hope nobody that truly likes the feel of driving MT doesn't get offended by my post. Once again, even those people cant deny that some people have a complex associated with being able to drive MT, which isn't even hard in the first place. I learned in 1 hour! Anyway, as much as I've seen the light and come to love 6MT over the past year that I've had my M3 (first MT car! ), I have to say that if I were buying an M5 I would probably go with DCT. MT just seems out of place on a car that size that also has such a substantial luxury cruiser element to its personality. But BMW, pay no attention to my feedback, as the M5 and M6 are both far larger cars than I need or want at the moment.

..for the record if I bought this car id get a DCT.... only DCT I have speant significant time in is an 2008 R32 DCT... that car changed my opinion on the joy of DCT... LOVE it I love 6MT in my 335i E92, but i'm not dealing with this 9M5's) cars weight and torque ... I just enjoy a 6MT, I feel more connected to the car. ~Frost

BMW acts like M5 owners are actually going to track their car so much the small lap time difference matters. It's about the feel and control.
If I was baller enough to order one, I'd get 6MT |

I had a GTR and it was crazy fast but I eventually got bored of clicking through the gears and sold it for a GT3RS which although much slower, I'm still head over heels for. As for the M5, just thinking about all that torque under my left foot is enough to get me back in a 6MT M car. My concern is BMW's lack of enthusiasm for the 6 MT on the M5. If they're going begrudgingly retrofit a 6MT, how good can it be? If their engineers had the same feeling about the joy of driving they had when developing the 1M then fine. Now I'm not too sure.

If you guys remember, when BMW released a 6speed MT e60 M5 they also did not allow you to fully disengage DSC/DCT. Which frankly is asinine when you're getting a manual transmission.
I hope they don't make the same mistake with the F10. Personally though, I think the DCT is an overall better match for the F10 M5. I would rather have a 6MT on a smaller and lighter car. |

time to move on
for the life of me i don't understand why people don't use the technology that are given to them. f1 cars have been using similar transmission for ages now. the m5 is a four door luxury sedan. putting a stick in it, looks weird and stupid. if you insist on driving a slower version of this m5 (manual trans) go ahead. i have just one advise to you, just save your money and go buy a 550 instead since it's slower than an m5.
