I'd take the one outta three myself. Whoever was driving the M is not a "driver".

BMW had a late start and had a horrid launch. Seems like he just floored it to second, and before he gained traction, shifted to third early. Launch Control/Less heavy right foot would have greatly benefited the M5. Nonetheless, that Tesla is damn fast

Not only did the tesla jump start the race, the M5 was poorly launched.
I bet with a proper driver they would be even and the M5 would eat it up top. |

What a bloody gay arse test. First, the so-called Tesla started BEFOR the M5, #2 the Launch control (which is designed to stop the rear wheels from spinning on launching) WAS NOT ENGAGED! Do that test again and i guarantee 100% the M5 is the winner!

But in this comparison, they may as well have used a 528i because the driver lost that race. You can clearly see towards the end of the run when the M5 finally hooks up and is in a proper gear, it's about to come sailing past the Tesla. It's obvious to me that he short-shifted first, hammered it into second and popped the clutch. You can clearly see the tires light up. |

now the combustion engine has come along way yes, from steam engines to high displacement engines to engines on todays standards. I believe that internal combustion engine will still be around in that 30-50 year's time but just used a lil differently like more advanced hybrids or in hydrogen fuel cell cars in later research.

Consider this: How long has BMW been around engineering M cars? Better yet, engineering cars? ...and Tesla? This is their second model, and still solely BATTERY POWERED! VERY BIG FRIGGAN DEAL! Props to Tesla and props to the falla making this video, When was the last time you were entertained by something completely honest with no imagination (insert sarcastic facial gesture)? Can anyone here say #Avengers? aaron

It's cool that the tesla won but come on, that m5 sounded beautiful. And if the m5 was correctly launched, the tesla probably wouldn't have beat the m5 by that much.

What they don't show is the M5 towing the Tesla back to a charging station so it can drive home (after 3 hours)

I dont look at this as a drag race, but more as to how electric cars became something enjoyable now.
Despite the outcome on this video (i do agree, it was a bit skewed) you can see how electric power is producing dreat results and is much easier to use. Not many family sedans in this world could race new M5 from stop light to stop light these days, Not to mention a car with 0 tailpipe emission And do 1/4mile in 12.5 with less than 4s 0-60 Tesla, IMO, has done a great job with this car http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...n/viewall.html |

This is such a shame. It's so obnoxious when car mags perform disingenuous testing like this ( I expect more out of Automobile ). The M5 and Model S are a very, very interesting comparison. Name an electric sedan that could even come *close* to M5 level performance prior to the Model S? This is a huge deal.
Instead of talking about that, we're all hung up on the fact that the Model S driver jumped the gun on the M5 driver by 0.3 to 0.5 seconds in what amounts to a street race. When performance is almost identical, RT makes a difference. Having said all that, the Model S still gets out of the hole better than the M5. I think there are a handful of reasons for this: * The M5 driver didn't use launch control; DUMB! * The output of an electric motor is a lot easier to control and reacts much faster to "throttle" changes; this makes launch control systems more effective * The torque output of an electric motor from a full stop is very close to linear, which means it can apply all its available force from a full stop; pretty amazing I think that even with a dead even start, the Model S would get out of the hole more quickly. From a tuner's perspective, electric cars could be a lot of fun. Anyone who isn't excited about electric cars isn't a "real" enthusiast (no true scotsman, holla!). I love the sound of an ICE, but I can find plenty of things to love about electrics as well.

i dont care how you look at it, M5 lost to a car that does 300 miles without no gas, thats impressive. In regards to combustion engines extinction, hmm, interesting theory, if we cant get oil we might be going to only electric engines soon, time will tell.
