Congrats and thx for the comparo shots. As has been the hallmark of the M5, a wolf in sheep's clothing, almost undetectable to the non-enthusiast eye, just how I like it!

This may sound crazy but I actually prefer the look of the 550i than my M5 except for the rear bumper and wheels. Widening the fenders on an already wide car makes the M5 almost look like a square instead of a rectangle. Though I love my car, the wideness of the M5 took away some of the sleekness I've liked about the 550i.

OP you never updated us after you "broke-in" the M5. Please give us your detailed impressions of ride, handling and performance in your magnificent M5.
As for aesthetics I think the M5 looks far better than the M Sport. The M5 has a more cohesive appearance. It looks like a roaring lion. Conversely the M Sport looks more cosmetic and ostentatious. If one looks at professional pictures of the M5 in monte carlo blue one really gets the feeling of exhilarating, roaring speed, whereas the M Sport is just good- looking without the roar of the lion. It's like the difference between a Bruce Lee and a Van Damme fight scene. The former looks and is more authentic. |

Nice write up. I also moved from the 550i (non sport) to the M5. I liked the 550, it was simple but solid. The M5 stuns you. At least once a day it makes me laugh out loud while driving it. It never gets old. But I've only had it for 3 months. I'm still laughing.

I currently own both the M5 and 550. My wife pulls away from me off the line every time in her 550. So guess what. Now I drive the 550. How ironic. The M5 handles better though but I dont own a race track and Id rather feel the pull then take a chance on the highways. Plus I think my wife wears the M5 better than me.

In sorry but its true. Ive read most of the post here and it seems allot of people that own or about to purchase a M5 are looking for excuses to get one or justify having one. I really wish I could say its a supreme car but I prefer the 550 over M5. Ive been driving BMW's for over 15 years and the 550 is a dream to have and drive. My wife will most likely trade the M5 in for the new Lexus that is out. I think its the ES350. Wont be trading my 550 anytime soon.
