Any advice for knees? My knees have never hurt this bad, worse than my legs.

I'm not a runner, biker, nada. This is all new territory for me.

I have bad knees from BMW racing as a kid. I use this Blue Emu pain cream from Walmart. Makes it feel real good, only need a tiny little bit on the front and back of the knees.

I ALWAYS got sore knees biking, always, absolutely hated it. I asked a bike forum and got 20 replies in 3 seconds, YOUR SEAT IS TOO LOW.

it bloody well worked too.

I recommend knee pads or a different position.

C'mon....surely you didn't expect something different from me.

Seriously though, pace yourself. One of my favorite quotes from a body builder "No one is coming for you." Rich people don't get rich over night and trust isn't built instantly; the same can be said with any type of growth. Growth comes a little at a time.

Simple rule of thumb: put your heel on the pedal. With the pedal at the very bottom your leg should be completely straight (with your butt on the saddle). That way when you put your foot in the normal position (pedal axle a bit behind the ball of your foot), your leg should be in a decent position.

If that still doesn't help, don't give up; there are a lot of variables! The last 3/16" of saddle height is over 10% of your efficiency.

Your knees shouldn't hurt when riding, ever. Regardless of whether you're a novice or otherwise. I took to riding a lot as a teenager, when Osgood schlatters disease meant I couldn't run more than about 100yd without my knees swelling up.

Agreed with above. I just started trail riding again with a buddy and once I got the seat position to a comfortable spot the knees felt much better the following day. Still felt tight, but as we've ridden more your body becomes accustomed.

Hell I raked leaves for the better part of 4 hours the other day and my body was achy for 2 days after just from the new movements. Or I'm just getting old, which I decline to accept as fact.

Speaking of Peloton, time for me to ramp things up! With the weather getting cold I'll be seeing a lot more cycle time.

Plus I'm making a trip back to the motherland in February for the first time in nearly 11 years - and people there comment on EVERYTHING. I could be 5 lbs heavier and they'll treat me like I need gastric bypass. So I need to lose a couple lbs to get them to shuttup.

Just go stand outside in nothing but your boxers. You'll lose the 5lbs just shivering in your damn city.

also work with less resistance and higher cadence (known as spinning, and hence spin classes). Less force on each pedal stroke is easier on the knees.

ease into a new exercise routine.

good luck!
