They're far from useless...unless the factory already provided one that accomplishes the same thing. * assuming your STOCK turbos didn't already have a cover over them. Ruben is not stock, this video you're trying to use as a reference is not stock.

The turbos in his setup sit higher - I don't know all the details but I would speculate that it is because they may have used the stock manifold and built some kind of an adaptor (V-band to the existing manifold and V-band to the Borg-W's).

They are useful to shield nearby wires, components, intakes and generally keep underhood temps down. They also help keep the turbine side retain its heat inside which is a good thing.
I had tried using a blanket on the stock housings a while ago but couldn't find anything that fit... I have a set unused if anybody wants it! |

But its just not the same as a proper jacket, try putting your hand on the standard heat shield after a run. Also its not a BHP gaining exercise, just don't want to loose BHP due to heat loosely escaping causing higher under bonnet temps / heat soak etc. The jackets will hold the heat in extremely well, rendering the stock cover superfluous to needs Ruben7520 and allmotor_2000 both bought blankets for mostly similar reasons to me, so guess they'll be buying some of your ocean fronted property too Chill out dude, lets keep the peace, and least you've learned something new today i will order some and let you know how i get on End of !! There we are, all wrapped up, cant use turbo jackets as there are none that fit properly due to the weird shape of the turbos. So now the excess heat is fully contained, so far it seems to keep things cooler but waiting to test with my temp gun.
I just have an issue with the stock shield as it does not contain the heat, it leaks out the sides, plus once the it gets hot you then have conductive heat and your back to square one. Its just a sheet of molded metal and metal is best conductor of heat. Anyway, looks better now, and had fun doing it - and on the plus side the wrap absorbs 80% of the wastgate rattle noise. - |
