Mine with 19" Michelin PA4. On an unplowed road, it's fine up to around 25cm. No issue at all.
Have not tried to venture out when it did snow more than 30cm (which was just last week here where I am) because don't have sufficient ground clearance |

Digging up a somewhat old thread...but it's getting cold so here goes...
Anyone with the 408M wheel setup...is it possible to get front and rear messed up? It's a long story but I had a shop put them on...and I notice the rear wheels *barely* clear the brake (maybe 1/8 inch) - fronts seem to have plenty of clearance. Didn't want to bother yanking one off to check if somebody already knew that clearance sounded right. I already asked someone else with 408M's but he's not going to have an answer 'til next week and it looks like I might have a road trip before then. |

Correct -
Front alloy wheels: 19x9" ET32 Rear alloy wheels: 19x9" ET25 As you can see, the offset is different. Even though you are running the square setup. Question: your shop put the rear to the front and front to the rear ? Quote:

That's the thing...I'm not versed in the offset jargon...so I'm asking if that's even possible as the clearance on the rear brake is so small. If I were close...or had the tools handy I'd check myself (the marks aren't visible right?). Thanks Bobblehead |

brake disc size is only fractional smaller...400mm for front & 396mm for rear (non ceramic brakes), the issue is more of the brake caliper.
The only way to check the proper installation is to take out the two front and see, the correct front should have BMW part # on the wheel. That being, 36112284252 Actually, you should check all four. Reason being when you bought them, the dealer may think they are all the same (19 x 9) and may have forgotten that the front & rear offset are different. Anyway, the correct rear bmw part # should read 36112284253 Last edited by bobblehead; 10-30-2013 at 07:20 PM.. |

My M5 is FINALLY here after ED, going to pick up tomorrow at T&C BMW. I now need to get winter rims & tires for it.
I think I am going to get the 408's so I can run square with 255's. For a tire, Blizzak LM's probably. I don't want Pirelli's and Michelin Alpins don't look aggressive enough for anything more than a light dusting (EDIT: Saw they actually work well in high depth, which is good. Just have more confidence in the LM's). Any new opinions on tires? Just want to know if there's something better I should be considering.

Thanks for the info Bobblehead - I was too general in my description - caliper is definitely what I'm talking about - yankin wheels off wasn't on my to do list this week...but you're right...probably the only way i'm going to know for sure. These were a set someone traded in for other wheels and were in new condition...I just didn't freakin think before I had them mounted on the car.
Anyway...just for fun...pics of what I'm seeing...maybe it's normal and I just don't know what normal is. (The last pic is my front caliper clearance). |

If you remove the wheels the offset is stamped on the inside. Don't worry about the part#. They will say ET25(Rear) or ET32(front).

That does not look right, I think bobblehead nailed it - your shop must have the fronts and rears swapped. I have the 408s for my winter set and when washing the wheels I can squeeze my fingers behind the rear caliprs to clean the outer portion of the barrel.

Hey, what about these wheels with a 35 offset? Will they fit on all 4 corners?

good news. For future swap over, better mark the wheel to ensure this mistake does not happen again.

Any word on whether this is likely to cause any damage due to the reduced brake clearance on the rear? I didnt have a spare or a stand so I couldnt change them myself. I have it back in the shop tomorrow for the swap, so, Ill report back if there's any damage found. |

This is the likely winter setup;
Stock competition package wheels, 20" 255/35 20 in front, 275/35 20 in the rear. Handmade spiked tyres from Sweden, Lappi, complete with rally spikes if necessary. Did I mention it's possible to get 650 spikes per tyre Regards H

I hope you never plan to drive on anything but snow and ice with those. Yikes! This sounds like overkill dipped in paranoia!!!
But do post pics. I want to see an M5 with these tires mounted!!

This car runs on Lappi tires, the same ones I'm thinking of. But I think now I may go with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 instead. They receive so many positive reviews its impossible to ignore. Last edited by Underwood; 12-09-2013 at 07:05 AM.. |

Cool video. That ski slope must be super hard pack? I am amazed the car doesn't sink at all when stopped. Also, It would seem to me that if you want all out winter performance perhaps an awe car would be better? RS6 or such?
Also, it appears according their product info that those tires used in the video are for competition use only and not approved for street use. Is that true?

I am shopping winter tires right now to mount on the 601M wheels (20 inch). I don't drive the car in the snow at all, but can't run high performance summer tires in winter in NY. I prefer to stay with a staggered set - giving the BMW engineers some credit for their design. Nobody seems to make winters in the stock sizes. Tirerack was suggesting Sottozero Serie II in 295/30/20 rear and 245/35/20 front (supposedly the 911 fitment). They also have the regular Sottozero in 285/30/20 rear and 255/35/20 front.
Seems to me that it would make more sense to go 10mm narrower both front and back rather than stay stock in backand go 20mm narrower up front. Also, the Sottozero get better survey responses than the Stoozero Serie II. Thoughts?
