Recommendation For In-Dash Camera(s) - Front & Rear

Hi Guys,

Looking for recommendations for In-Dash Camera(s) - both Front & Rear to be installed in my M5 F10 2016.

Any recommendations?

I was looking at this:

BMW Advanced Car Eye - http://www.bmw.com/com/en/owners/acc...l?proDsId=9872

- any opinion on this model?

I am looking for "state of the art" / "dependable" / "problem free", etc.

Price is not an issue (within reasonable, of course).

Thanks.

I like having BMW products but what I don't like about it is the size.

For the price, quality, and size, I would go the blackvue route. I like the size, specs, and the fact I can use the iPhone app to view the camera and settings.

I would love a low draw option, motion triggered for parking monitoring.

Try the Koonlung KS1 (Google it). Had it now for a year and no issues, also doubles as speed camera alert.

BMW Advanced Car Eye

I have installed for 1.5 years the Advanced Car Eye 2 cameras.
Feedback:
. fully integrated product to the car's wiring system
. original OEM so no warranty issues
. size can sometimes also be a plus as you can immediately view the videos
. on 3 occasions, it has been of clear help (but hey: this is what a dash cam is for !) it seems that if you have a M5 people take more liberty at challenging you...

. size: BMW please take note - for the next M5 can you please integrate a dash cam to the car with access on the Nav system ?
. some technical issues: was replaced under warranty as the back camera and then the front had a problem
. battery drain: now sorted but for some time in parking mode, it would not stop filming - software update (do it regularly)

Overall: Would I buy it again - yes.
A reasonably good OEM product which at the end of the day is well integrated to the car's electronic systems (wiring etc...) and works well.

Hope this helps.

Im very interested in this two...

Im currently considering the blackvue and the BMW option but both have their drawbacks

Blackvue: - probably offers the best functionality and discrete looks. However is aftermarket and I know some people have experienced battery drainage issues.

BMW - unsightly and dont really like the fact its so big with an LCD screen..However its great that it fully integrates into the car

Im currently undecided myself and have been toying with what to buy for some time now so im interested to see where this thread goes

Thanks everyone.

I am still considering my options, but it would seem the Advance Eye is something of my interest. Now, given the cost of the product (here in Canada) - approx. $600 for both front & rear camera module, plus labour of installation - 1.5 hrs (for the front) and 2 hrs (for the rear), it'll cost me approx. $1000.00 for the entire product.

In terms of warranty, I have a very technically inclined person who would do the installation for me (save lot of money with labour), but would it affect BMW's warranty?

That unit is a simple plug and play with the factory wiring with BMW M5?

Also, is there possibility for a direct interaction with the ConnectedDrive or no? (That would be cool! )

Thanks again.

Yes with the Koonlung KS1, you can push AV to the NBT head unit. I do. It also gives me Speed Camera warnings on NBT too.

@Karthigan

I just got the Blackvue 650-2CH installed and I must say, it works amazingly. Just make sure they're installed in the right places.

Just installed a Thinkware F770 F&R camera...really nice bit of kit. Was deliberating for a while on the F750; when I went to buy one after a month of doing nothing, I noticed that the 770 had just been released, which looks far nicer and more "factory". Quite a lot slimmer than the 750 and doesn't have the awkward looking aluminium camera housing on the side. Cable management onto the body of the camera is neat as well.

I have mine tucked up almost to the top of the windscreen, on the LH side of the rear view mirror (I'm in the uk, so in a rhd car), so my camera is slightly offset to the left from centre, but makes very little difference with the wide camera angle

The 770 has enhanced exposure control over the 750, almost a bit HDR like from what I can gather. Not tried viewing any night footage yet but after a week of hooning around the UK Peak District this week, it's done very well, albeit I had to crank the parking and collision sensitivity right down to try and prevent false positives.

Hard wired mine into the glovebox fuse box to ensure parking mode activates. £249 for the front and rear camera, plus £18 for the hardwiring power lead (on Amazon its quoted as 4m long, it wasn't, it was 3m...fine for glovebox, way too short for trunk routing)

The size of that BMW lcd screen would be too distracting for me (assuming you cant turn the screen off). Everytime I look in the rearview, I'd probably glance briefly at the camera lcd.

I'd be very surprised if the screen didn't have a setting to turn it off whilst driving. It's actually illegal in the UK to have a live screen that's in the field of view of the windscreen.

From what I've read, the BMW branded camera is nothing special AT ALL...most certainly paying for a little BMW roundel on somebody elses old tech camera. That's it. With the fast paced developments in these units, I wouldn't consider buying a "BMW" one just because of the badge...clunky looking piece of kit.

This forum is well worth a look >>> https://dashcamtalk.com/forum/

Still happy with the Thinkware, don't even notice its there apart from the voice announcements (which can be muted). I have noticed that if you get too brave with the Parking Mode voltage setting (you can set the car voltage at which the camera will deactivate, to save flattening the battery), you consistently get an iDrive voltage warning the next time you go to the car (in my case, the next morning)...so, I trimmed it back up from 11.3v to 12.0v last night, and this morning, no warning. Obviously, the flip-side of that is that I won't have as much parking protection, should a collision be detected.

The other point which I'm going to look into, is that once the car is in Parking mode after switching off the engine, opening and shutting a door or the trunk will trigger a parking event, which then gets announced the next time the ignition is swithced on. So....if in the middle of the evening I want to get something out of the car, I'll create a trigger, likewise getting into the car the next morning, sit in the drivers seat, shut the door behind you and another parking event is triggered before the ignition is switched on. Definitely not super annoying, just a bit odd (maybe it BAU, dunno)

Did you ever get this? Any feedback? Considering getting it. BTW, is this made in China?

Yes sir I did get it. The unit is assembled in China.

Easily the best on board camera I have ever owned. It's a great unit. Fit and finish is fantastic, video quality is great, low light is really good, etc.

Mine is hardwired to the car ignition, and it auto starts and stops, with auto overwrite. However I can tag a clip with one button while driving and it will protect that clip from overwrite. The software is great, and the telemetry that it brings in is awesome. Very granular customization of the overlays is available, although I prefer the default display.

Here is a 60 second sample clip:

I hardwired it to a fuse in the panel behind the glove box. This was the only place I could find that only supplied power when the ignition was on. My Valentine 1 is also on that fuse.

Any pics of the install? Curious how it looks from outside. My main hesitation with having one of these all hardwired in is that they'd block a sunshade in the summer and/or get totally melted here. 2 months of > 110 degree days.

The camera detaches from the mount easily, with the push of a button. Otherwise, yes, it will block a sunshade.

I'll get picture as soon as I can.
