Agreed. Every single car I have ever owned has been a manual with the exception of the E60 M5 and the F10 M5. I'm seriously considering getting for my next car an E39 M5 or a 6MT E60 M5 or 6MT E63 M6. I was highly considering something fun and exotic and simple next such as even a lowly Audi R8 4.2L 6MT, but I still think they are pretty overpriced. Either way my next car is going to be manual and have an NA engine. Will probably keep the F10 M5 for the long haul though.

I've had all generations of M5 also and my E60 was a 6MT. Having finally given in to DCT with my F10, I've come to accept the minute "disconnection" with it. It's vastly better than the Porsche double clutch (I couldn't stand the creep from a stand still).
If this car is to just continue on with the generations and not be a daily driver, go 6MT. If it will be frequently used, DCT. Had this been asked about the M6 Gran Coupe, 6MT all the way simply for the fact it will be the last mid/large Bimmer with MT (and shall be my next order). |

I actually had the opportunity to drive both back to back today. Obviously - there is no right or wrong answer - the car is pretty astounding either way. My thoughts:
The DCT transmission is vastly superior in terms of extracting every ounce of performance out of the car. You just can't keep the manual on power the way you can with the DCT. It is clearly a significant part of the engineers design of the car. Having said that - there is something incredibly fun about working a manual transmission that can't be matched by the DCT. Dropping down a gear or two on exit ramp and letting the clutch out is glorious. 6 speed wins here. The issues with the 6 speed (imho) are the clutch is too light with a weird take up - not what I was expecting from a performance car. My friend's Jeep clutch is firmer. Turbo lag was evident with 6 - not a deal breaker - but noticeable. I could live with it. The gear spacing was a bit odd too - needs a 7th gear. 6 speed quieter? Did not notice a lot of exhaust burps. Each of the two transmissions dramatically transform the character of the car. I'd give the nod to the DCT because I think it is an important piece to the entire package. The 6 speed is fun but seems to neuter the car a bit. Liked them both - but I think the DCT is the better option for me. I could feel differently tomorrow though.😏 |

Really
Depends on what you want to do with your Soon-to-be-M5 If your keeping it stock maybe a dct is better for You But if you are slowly modding it to a high power car and like to have control over onyour car and not over a Silly computer i would advise a manual car and not have Lazy legs. Lol, Indeed manual can be slow from a roll race but if you shift fast enough it can be actually faster than dct, You do feel a littlw boost lag on stock car Personally I dont feel any boost lag now that i have modded the car minor tweak and tunes can get rid of that lag with proper tuning. i personally have no regrets on a manual car. Love the way it sounds, controls, and reacts to my shifting. There is no Wrong choice inbuying a dct or manual it will just be what suits your needs. |

DCT as the Manual was designed more for the 5 series (550 I think) and not for the M5. So - for North American customers only who wanted a manual - this was deemed to be fine.

There is no way a manual beats a DCT in a drag race
Just sayin

To be honest, I think this car is too big and heavy for the manual-it's personality also needs the rapid shifting of the DCT. Not a sports car but a straight ahead torque monster. I can't weight for reduced wait.

Warm and fuzzy thread here for the DCT. I've been enjoying the heck out of mine as well.

I know i drive a lowly 2 series, but I thought i'd chime in. This will be your last opportunity to purchase a manual transmission M5, brand new, most likely forever. From here on out, you'll have to buy some one elses abused problem.
Also, incase some of you didn't know, the E39 M5 used the same transmission as the 540 and the E60 M5 used the same transmission as the 550i. So there's nothing new in that regard. The E39 technically was the least different from the highest non-M 5 series available, much like the F10 is today, and yet it's everybodies favorite M5. Not the S38 E28/E34. Just some food for thought.

Only time i'll ever find myself in a DCT ///M is if one day, BMW put them in X#M models, or made an F11 M5.
Drove too many DCT M's (never owned), own a MT M (which feels like garbage compared to other MT M5's), still love the 6MT in this car. |

Yep. I drove a 6MT M5 and hated it for the same reasons I hated my F10 535. I was a diehard 6MT guy up until my last 6MT in the 2011 535. Never again will I buy a 6MT BMW because the joy in them no longer exists.

Funny as there is a similar thread over on the Rennlist 911 forum.
This will be a moot point in the likely near future as manuals are becoming very rare and maybe not even an option on future M5's. And with hybrid technology evolving, transmissions will be a thing of the past. I drove a manual 991 GTS recently and it was a pure joy to drive. Then drove a PDK and was kind of bored. I actually prefer how the DCT behaves versus the PDK. |
