You need new brake pads or rotors or engine belts (or wiper blades), the leasee pays.

I would prefer to see BMW keep the old maintenance plan but not sure this will affect me personally. My wife and I have owned or leased at least a dozen BMW's and typically never keep them longer than 3 years/36k miles. Don't recall ever having belts or brakes replaced but lots of $$$ on tires, which aren't covered anyway. If you keep your cars longer I can see where this would be a negative but 3 years of covered maintenance is still better than none.

But as Devil's advocate, since it all now falls on the consumer, perhaps brake pads/rotor quality on new cars won't be as robust.

Agree when I sold my M5 after three years never used any of it actually.

there will be an "upgrade" option available for purchase, extending coverage beyond 3 year/36,000 miles.

Wonder how this would affect lease returns on these models?
If brakes are below certain measurements, can they insist on them being replaced before taking the lease return in?
We don't need to worry now on the 3 year leases, as the free maintenance is in effect for another year at the time of return.

Pad and rotors shouldn't cost more than $600 per side for the fronts. The rears should be a bit less.

Well, the 4 years included maintenance were exceptional. And expensive. I can see them trying to cut it.

The biggest practical problem I see is people who lease 36 months and then extend for 1-3 months due to no fault of their own because BMW slacks off building and shipping their already ordered new ride.

Do those people deserve to be hit with maintenance cost (especially brakes) when their deal with continuous back-to-back BMW leases was that they have predicable cost including maintenance?

I find it interesting that everyone has no problem paying the steep depreciation cost, but complains about losing a $100 oil change and maybe a brake service. I buy my BMWs used and no maint cost will ever equal the 60k in depreciation the original owner paid in the first four years.
